I was definitely impressed by that YouTube video with the 1985 Cadillac...

my 1941 Cadillac has dual horns that are either stock or installed by the previous owner in the early 80s. in my opinion they’re sufficiently loud. years ago I junked a 1974 sedan Deville with a four horn set up. ***uming I haven’t already sold it I’m going to try it and see how it compares to the two horn set up on my 41 Cadillac. and then I have a set of Italian air ****. and somewhere in my stuff I still have a DB meter. obviously I need to find it. Scientific and all that ****.

Apparently a 1 finger salute isn't loud enough for who? :)

as long as you can get them to "Bleep" their pants, then it is loud enough, anything more is just pleasure, I mean overkill..

Bought this siren at the swap meet last Sunday for a fin, just to help a pal pay for his space. Loud as hell but illegal on a non-emergency vehicle. Probably a pretty stiff fine too...

Has anyone actually *measured* how loud their horn is?
So we can do an objective comparison?

I have a dB meter ap on my phone.

  13. so... get an electric air compressor and find a yard that has a bunch of semis.
has anyone suggested a semi truck horn yet? all you need is an electric air compressor in the trunk!

In the 1920s Hudsons had a Klaxon horn named "The Mile Away" that was big and loud.

    Hello,

The idea of a very loud horn could have other ramifications. If it is attention getting that is the end result, perhaps a loud horn, but muffled is a better option. The old saying… “put a sock in it…” is an example of a very effective method of an unusual horn for those warning times.

Yes, the sock in the horn opening muffles the overall sound, but it is the unusual sound that gets the attention of the driver ahead and around your car. It still commands their noticing something is not right, but with a tone that says, listen and be aware. Not an “in your face” attention grabbing loud horn.

The muffled sound is unique and says what you want, but with an elevated smart, cl*** at***ude over the idiots making mistakes on the road.

When we were on the streets during our hot rod/cruising/drag race days, we had the stock horns as supplied by the factory. They all sounded the same. It even sounded like our dad’s big Buick sedans. So a distinction was necessary. We found tons of horns in the s**** yards and even in the diesel truck shops that were/are plentiful in our old neighborhood, as well as nearby city of Wilmington.

The best sound for our Impala was to stuff an old sock into the curved hole, taping it in, but allowing different sounds to come out each time the sock went in farther. It was different than 90% of the horns on the street and gave notice to those around us as we needed the horn for some reason. "Tuning" had a different meaning... Nice, but distinct enough to get noticed.

No one wanted to get any damages on a cool sedan for happy teenagers…
It was a simple, but effective way to get noticed when necessary, without the sound of a extremely loud horn… YRMV
