(To EMS and the former car dealer):
I think you guys are missing the "big" picture in your rant. Your right that when wanting to put forth a "vision" there is always going to be resistance or cynicism, because most people don't have that ability to "visualize" the final outcome. But consider this:the NSRA for years resisted expansion, even when it could have went up to pre-64 cutoff. Would there have been complaining? Oh yeah!
I think the point with most is the extreme by which the NSRA moved. They didn't want to be like "Goodguys" because then, to them, that would be admitting that Meaders kicked there butt for so many years:mad:. (Could it be because he started a "nats" of his own in a longtime NSRA "nats" town? within 2-3 weeks of there own event? Oh yeah,as a competitor, I'm sure it more than got under there skin (as well as into there wallet:rolleyes:).
When considering why a business is slowing down, you have to be reflective in assessing why? Because you are right, in capitalism, profit is the goal.(I am self employed, so I know especially now, you have to be flexible:)). And, I think that the NSRA used the wrong motivation in it's DRASTIC change. They did not think about it's customer, (well that is not totally true as EMS is a customer, because you guys purchase space, but not the customer it should have in mind).
The HAMB is attractive to HAMBERS because Ryan's a hotrodder, he live's it, it's in his blood. That quality make the HAMB a place where people want to be, he writes about it daily. He doesn't need to convince us what a hot rod is, or change it's definition (that's political correctness) to get more members. He's just Ryan, a hot rod guy with a really well run message board:) . And whether he is in the office or at home, I don't get the sense they are far from his thoughts.:)
People will be attracted to a good product, and will pay the extra dollars to buy it. But they will also buy a poor product if it is cheap enough, that's why we buy from China, even though it is becoming clearer everyday that those guys are scumbags. They won't,however, pay extra for both, and if there were over 12,000 cars there last year, then you'd better call Bernie Madoff for investment advice. I know, I live here, NOBODY knows the 'Ville better:cool:. I saw the joint before the "expansion" and after, I go to University of Louisville basketball games at "The Hall" where there are 20,000 plus, that parking lot only holds about 7000 cars, and yes,I know that a lot of people parked in the grass last year too.And dude, I also grew up less than ten minutes away from the fairgrounds, (Yeah I know that everybody else calls it the "Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center", but it will always be "The Fairgrounds" to us "locals").
I understand about the "buy" in to the hobby, as I am 38 and started my first car when I was 25, drove it in when I was 28, (AND I now have 4 children). But isn't that what led to the "ratrod" craze? And didn't that inject TONS of life into an "old mans" hobby? Those kids (actually people my age :))built some awesome cars, with tons of character. I don't think they were inspired by a 78 Camaro (probably scavenged the 350/350 from it though!;)) let alone a Chevette.
A lot of "Street Rod" clubs over the years have volunteered at the event, and if your business' had that much support, I'm sure you would agree it would be MUCH easier to make money:). So did the NSRA consider those guys as well as the vendors?.
People drive from all over the country to attend shows such as the "Lonestar Roundup" (Man, I REALLY hope to go sometime! Those organizer's get IT!) or even our local best kept secret: "Beatersville". And the grandaddy of them all, The NSRA, forgot what "it" is, and I hope it can survive, but if not? I have a lot of other choices to spend my "capitalist" dollar.

  3. Its funny how some people who drive pre-48 cars seem to think they are a little closer to god than others.I drive a 50 ford coupe and cant enter some runs here that I could in a cookie cutter roadster built with not one part older than 3 years, pre 48 my arse. My rant over sorry........

You know, it's very difficult to explain or to draw a picture for some to completley understand. Especially those who have never attended or participated.
Every car attending these events, (Pre 49) owners, were membership paid, card carrying members of an organization created for owners of Pre 49 vehicles.
We had our own events such as the Nationals. IT was decided, without even a membership poll/questionaire or vote to open the membership and events to owners of cars all the way through the production year of 1981 (next year 1982, 1983 next & so on).
The Street Rod Nationals had over 11, 000 participants cars (pre 1949) this past year.

This issue has nothing to do with anyone feeling better than anyone else or, any car being better than another. We are all car enthusiasts and that is why there are many clubs or groups that are DEDICATED to one brand or another be it Tri 5, Ford, Chrysler, Buick, MG or whatever.
this help you picture it a little better?

  7. My sentiments exactly! That's why I quit going there years ago. Just two much hassle getting around, and I've been going there since it was the old Gatlinburg run (70's) and Pigeon Forge was a three motel town.

I go to Louisvile (or did) to look at PRE-48 cars, and I don't attempt to look at ALL of them, just the years and styles that I like. I have a 56 Chevy pickup, but that belongs in another venue.

And if I have to wade through a bunch of bling and associated hardware to talk to a vendor, then I will spend my money with another vendor. While the vendors look at it from a business standpoint and a place to reach more potential customers with the year change, they're not the membership, and the membership is against the year change!

Vern and Gilbert need to grab their ears and yank real hard and pull their heads out into the sunlight.

No, it's more like going to a strip club. If you want to see neked women, you go to the one with women.

A strip club with neked dudes is the wrong one for me. Some may like that, but I choose not to go there.

  14. Not crazy about it but I think economics forced them to do something.. most show counts were down over the past few years.... For what it's worth I went to the South East Nats and the blend was good...most newbies were 50s customs. only a few cameros and tangs.... so I'm going to give them a chance.... and now I can drive my wife's 50 for a change....

Not going I see no advantage in driving that far when I can go to a Goodguys event less than 400 miles from home without and K-Cars there. I let my membership expire too no longer an advantage to be a member.

Most of the people that cruise that strip are well behaved, but in the past few years a lot of donked vehicles and crotch rockets have shown up and caused the police to crack down on every one, the police have learned to choke the traffic to try and cut down on these guys doing dangerous burn outs in a very narrow strip of pavement with multitudes of people including kids along the side lines. Down on Preston hwy there is a church that has an after show, show that is pretty cool, a well rounded mix of cars.....
I own a 64 Plymouth and don't want it to be mixed in with the pre-49 crowd, it is not the same. I think that all cars have a time that they fit into, and shows should cater to those years. I go to the mopar nats to see my favorite muscle cars, just like I go to the frog follies or the NSRA to see certain types of cars. Is not the reason we all got into this hobby was because we were influenced by some era of car and it's style, the build and or the look. I don't think that one car year is any more or less better than the next it is all about individual choice. We drive and build what we want because we identify with that in some way. I personally don't think there was anything interesting built after 1968, that is my opinion and opinions are like buttholes some stink worse than others.

Maybe we should have a "Deuce Gathering" at the next Tri-5 Chevy National Meet or how about a Merc-Deuce reunion at a Super Chevy?
I'm sure none in either group would "cry".

There are always those who just can't see the situation or understand the dis-similarity in early and later cars.

Very well said! That is the exact reason I went away from tri-fives and muscle cars in the early 80's and started building pre war cars. The NSRA was the King of The Hill then.

  21. I can't believe getting packed onto an airplane (with screaming babies) and flying (enjoy the strip search?) these days would be more fun than driving to LARS in my Deuce Roadster! Four times so far and I can't wait to do it again. It's the drive that's fun! So much fun in fact, I add a few thousand miles and make it a 5000+ mile round trip! And waiting in California is the best show on earth where you are personally welcomed by LA Roadsters Club members, and it doesn't cost you a dime! Easy? No, FUN, HELL YES!

I left the NSRA years ago because I saw how Vern treated the volunteers that put the money in his pocket. They were an arrogant bunch then and its just a lot more obvious to everyone else now. Their arrogance is what has got them to what they have become now.

    Jerry,
    I totally agree ...
    :)
For a roadster guy ( or gal ) ... that has to be one of the the BEST roadster days. It is difficult to explain to some one who had never done it or been there.

I have 4 of the LA Roadster pewter event steins ( here in South Carolina ) and plan on adding a few more before I do the " dirt nap thing "
    :D

12/5/09 | Inaugural Event Location Selected | Vintage Street Rodders of America

Currently plans are being made for our inaugural event to be held Mid-Summer 2010 in East Tennessee. After several very good
location suggestions, East TN was selected because of its central location to our potential show participants and members,
temperate climate, and easy access to 2 major Interstates (I-81 and I-26). All details will be released February 1, 2010.

As we grow, future show locations for consideration are as follows: Northern VA, Kentucky, Illinois, and Ohio.

I have been going to the Nationals since the mid 70's. I really enjoy seeing old friends and the vendors. With the power parking and billet everything I will choose to attent the Frog Follies instead. I will also say that my company exhibited for years and advertised in Street Scene. Both will come to an end. As the NSRA says everything changes and I do as well.

Petejoe I have one small problem with the VSRA - the name. Take the Street out and substitute the word HOT and maybe you're onto something.

As far as the NSRA is concerned I quit as a member years ago due to their 'my way or the highway' attitude, their appalling lack of interest in addressing safety issues, their mind boggling arrogance and the serial monotony of their shows. The old adage 'what goes round comes round' has never been truer and now they are begging - how low can they go?

  27. Randy, as usual, we think alike! :D If any of this was easy, we sure wouldn't be building our own cars and driving them all over the country without windows or air conditioning! And where else but the LARS would they give you those classy pewter mugs? I sure hope everything works out and I can make it to dinner with you and Don out there this year. Did you get the Deuce Gazettes I sent you? I liked that one great pic of the ALL DEUCES RUN so well I put it on the last issues cover!

I havent been goin since the seventies but I totally agree with you on the catching up with friends thing. There are people at the NSRA shows that I only get to see once or twice a year and I'll definitely miss that.
