Technical Love Joy shock conversion for Fords

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by EmperorOfWestVirginia, Dec 5, 2020.

  1. Has anyone here ever rebuilt a set of Delco Love-Joy knee shocks for a late 30’s early 40’s Ford.

Trying to figure out how to how to remove the shaft and lever arm from the shock. These particular units don’t have the set screw/bolt.

  3. I tried to but the splines on the shaft were so tight that I ended up busting the housing. I did manage to press the shaft apart after I broke it but even that was difficult. I had another pair so just cleaned them up and didn't replace the shaft seal. These are top fill so I run the oil only to the bottom of the shaft. Seems to work ok. That is only a leather seal and there was a company that rebuilt them but they modified the shaft and seal to make it easier but the cost was not for me. 20180818_163941.jpg

When that type of lever shock got worn we used to put gear oil in them to stiffen them up. If there's no set screw/bolt what hold the shaft in.
