i just picked up an "A" spring that i wana put in my car...im gona rebuild the frame to fit it...will give me more trunk room and clearance for a quickchange...but this spring seems awfully tall...way more then i need even with it behind the axle on the 47 rear...does anyone know a way to lower these springs...without spending money on a reversed main leaf...ive seen a few with more of a kink in the sides..what are these off of? or how was this done?...any advice at all would be a big help...i donlt need this much suspension travel

Are you certain it's an "A" spring? might be a "T", they were similar, but taller.
Trad. ways to lower the spring are: remove leaves, reverse spring eyes, in the old days you could heat and bend the main leaf like you said, but it's not recommended [IMG]

I think you mean where the spring is arching down and about 4 inches from the end it turns back up, right? This was a method for getting the car lower to the ground and it's not a good idea. The spring has been heated in the bend area and the car weight allows it ot sag. This takes all of the temper out of the spring in this area and there is nothing to prevent it from sagging even more with use, usually unevenly from side to side.

What you have sounds to me to be an A spring. They do have a rather high crown and were mounted on top of the axle in the stock configuration. The other spring you mentioned, with the flatter area is a T spring. They also will fit above a quick change but will not fit in a Model A rear crossmember. Look at mounting your spring behind your axle. This will give you all the flexability you'll need to adjust your ride height. A lightweight hot rod could get by with as few as five spring leaves. This will help lower the spring pack. A Stock Model A roadster came with seven. Your springs will settle up to an inch after a few miles as well. Perch width on an A is 47-1/4". Good luck, dug

    thanks very much dug,
is that the width of the perches on the axle? i****ume so...i guess mine is an A because it fits real nice in the cross member...maybe i'll take 2 ply's out and then build it how i want...then if it settles over time i will have them to put back in for spacing...about 1/2 inch i guess...

    thanks
