As a 40 year ASE master tech, I can remember springs in GM and Mopar, lower hose, top fill radiator applications for years. Have seen cases where hose would "flatten" with out spring, while cracking throttle, with a perfectly good radiator and pump, go figure, everyone has a theory, after cross -flow rads arrived, maybe hose material got better, and mfr. skipped spring,
, go to ACE or Menards and get a couple and stuff 'em in if it helps. Sucked into pump is B.S. Period.

The solution is simple. The hoses usually collapse from getting old, soft and spongy. Engine speed and gunk in the cooling system, not acceleration cause the collapse. If appearance or originality is not an issue just buy a Gates flexible hose and be done with it. The spring is molded into the hose and can't rust away or come out.
