I see many Model As lowered and rarely does anyone keep the stock 19s. I found these pictures taken in the 40s with stock 19s while being lowered on Google. The dual carbs are pretty cool too. Have any of you all lowered your Model As and keep the 19s? If so I'd love to see pictures and also how you went about lowering it. I have a stock 1930 Model A and considering some alterations.

Running mechanical brakes on a lowered Model A isn't rare. Quick search on Google will provide enough information to fix all issues you have stated. I'm not trying to be argumentative in anyway. I like having mechanical brakes but am considering lowering my car. I don't want to hammer the car but rather knock the grandpa off of it. I definitely am leaning towards more of a full fendered traditional hot rod 4 banger.

I've read several threads about all that and still have questions, lol. I was just curious how many of you all kept the 19s. Seems most lose them for the 16s.

  9. No most Model A's came with 3.78 ratio, 4.11 is very uncommon probably only a special order back in the day on pick ups to handle an extra load. The 3.54 "high speed" rear was an option also.
That car may not be as low as it appears its a 28-29 coupe with a 30-31 ch***is under it. Note the ill fitting splash apron to the rear fender. I think those guys are just leaning hard on that fender to give it a lowered appearance, the drivers side doesn't look "down". For that matter it could be parked in a hole or something to give that appearance.
I like your coupe, don't be in a hurry to change it up too fast. A stock A is a lot of fun.

Here's my stocker. Rubber rake with 550 & 750 17's and a worn out front spring

Model "A" 19-inch wheels will fit later drums is you use the readily available spacers to support the hub. Do not try to use those wheels without the spacer.

  11. You don't see the As with stick wheels very often because even back in the '30s a wheel upgrade was an easy way to make your car cool just like today.

The A wheels are a little flimsy for an upgraded drive train. that said I got 4 if anyone wants them. they are the perfect wheel for a Gow Job. ;)

The reason you don't see stock A wheels on a hot rod A is because all the early hot rodders would be embarr***ed to run them. After they got a little more speed in the engine, they'd switch to 16" wheels. And don't tell me that a hot rodder was actually buying a brand new (or two year old) Model A to turn into a rod before there were 16 inchers. Maybe a half percent of the early rodders out there could do that.

Look at all the very early dry lakes pics you can find here on the HAMB. I can't remember ever seeing a stock A wheel on any of those cars. It just wasn't done.

(Now somebody is gonna post one to prove me wrong. ;) )

  13. I bet tire avlability played a part too. There aren't too many choices in a skinny 19" tire

You all definitely are making me want to lose the 19s and get 16s.

  15. I hate to say it but your friend is wrong. 3.78 is the "standard" ring and pinion. They sell the 3.54 new as well as a 3.27. I have what I believe is a 4.11 rear in a car and it "pulls" way different than any other A I have ever driven.
Check this out: http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/rearaxleratios.htm Yes it does say the 4.11 is used on pickups and sedans but not the "standard" by any means. The 4.11 I have is going in my hill climb car. I want it to be quick off the line

I have 4:11's in my pickup. With a 32.5 inch tire. I can't imagine having less gear.

I was wrong, 4;11 WAS an option for Models A, I totally mis-understood what was talked about as far as rear gear ratios for Model A's.. Thanks.

Note that this kid took a 28-29 Coupe body and put it on a 30-31 ch***is. Note the misfit on the rear fender to splash apron, and the addition of a cowl band. Bob upload_2016-3-19_18-21-58.png

Not my car. I saw this on Facebook. It's bagged with air ride while retaining the 19's.

  20. I run 4.11's in my 29 RPU with an 84 F100 trans 4th is a 26% overdrive. I used a 33 34 front axle for 1 3/4" drop . I also have a reverse eye front spring for another inchI used 32 brake parts cause I put a set of 33 brakes.
Having been there, the first thing done with an A was to swap out the wheels, Ford16" spokes, Kelsey's or 40' "Steely"'s 15's were just coming out and were scarce. I'm talking about late 40's early 50's. Yes I'm 80 !!

I am going to run 19s on my 29 special coupe. I am however running juice brakes. I am not worried about the older wheels as I am running a banger and don't expect the thing to go more than 65 MPH. I did choose to run 19s instead of the stock 21s that came on 28-29. I like the looks of the bigger A hubcap. As far as the drop I used a 6" Z on the back and for the front I used 4"drop axle, reversed eye spring and an aftermarket '32 style front cross member. Hope this helps.
