Well, after reading many of the posts on the board I am not going to subframe my new project nor am I going to mustang II it. I want to rebuild the front end but, do want to try to lower it. What is the best suggest in lowering a 48 chevy coupe? I have seen cut springs. That does change the spring rate. I am going to pull the original 216 and probably go to a chevy v-8 due to all the original has sat for over 20 years and, not real interested in a 235. With cutting springs will it hold up to a sbc? What other suggestions do you have. What company do you like the best to get resto parts for rebuilding the front end? As far as brakes go. I really like master power for my past projects but how good are they for a 48? Are there better brands? Everyone boasts theirs are the best. Who has first hand knowledge? I was gonna run the corvette master with the power boster. ???
if I had your car. ( and I do have a 47 chevy coupe) I would think about buying Chassis engineering bolt in motor mounts.. (which I think will work with the stock suspension.. (you should check with them first) then I would mount the new v8 and trans in the car and see what the springs do.. if they are originals then its likely that they will have settled under the weight of the new engine trans. other than the stock steering box, i dont see a reason why this plan wouldnt work.. the front suspension rebuild parts should be avail from several parts houses. (i will not suggest one over another) and the adaption of new discs up front should be completely sufficient.. you didnt however mention your plan for the rear axle?? I THINK that a 55 - 57 is a bolt in.. (with spring pin relocation) but I am not certain..
just lowered my 47 coupe. all stock front end stuff. the shocks suck i couldnt afford them around 300 a piece so i gotta little bounce . heres before i got all my stuff from jamco. 3 1/2 inch drop coils 2 inch drop spindles new king pins etc the rear was 4 inch drop springs and 2 inch blocks and im sitting on the bump stops. frame will get a notch eventually!
Flop, That looks SWEET... Way better than stock. I am almost thinking about an air bag setup. Do you know if someone makes one for stock suspension. I believe stace sure can make or brake a car.
sawzall... i am not real sure about a rear. If I add disk brakes to the origanal front I maybe able to find the same bolt pattern for an s-10 or nova rear. That I will have to source from a junk yard. I am sure a chevy 55-57 rear maybe pretty hard to source or I could build a nine inch for the same price new bearing caps are easy to weld on and axles shafts can me resplinded.
Beautiful car, Flop... That thing sits perfect. Did you keep the six lug bolt pattern? And are you still running drum brakes? I was wanting to due away with the inclosed drive shaft but didn't know if I could find a 6 lug open drive line rear end for my car. I really want to keep the stock wheels... Its a 42 sedan by the way...
