I want to lower my '56 truck 3"-4". It's got to have P/S so the wife can drive it. Whats better, lowering springs (Posies?), or dropped axle? Must. II IFS is easiest and probably cheapest (after I buy a dropped axle, P/S kit, new shackles, etc.) but then I'd have to go to 5 bolt hubs and lose my nice 6 bolt wheels. If I go dropped axle, what else would I have to change (shock mounts, etc.)? Has anyone ever used a power rack & pinion set up for straight axles from No Limit Engrg.?
If you use late model rotors, you can keep your six lug rims. We did a Camaro subframe and used fullsize Buick rotors which are the same as 72 Chevy truck rotors. I would imagine the late model six lugs could be used. You might need a spacer for the wheel bearings. Just a thought.
My '55 second-series had a Volare' clip under it when I got it. IFS, adjustable ride height, discs, and power steering came with it. It rode great and I'd recommend it for your truck- I bet it'd be cheaper than an aftermarket clip. You'd have to lose the 6-lugs though. I'd never keep the straight axle, and I certainly wouldn't invest more into it. That's like a band-aid on an amputation IMO. But that's just my opinon. I know some guys like their straight axles under these old trucks...but I'll never know why. ~Scotch~
You might also what to look at the dakota kit. I have a 57 chevy truck that I want to lower as well. Still researching for the best choice though. If I decide on something anytime soon I'll make sure to shoot you a PM.
