This is my first got rod build. Just wondering if removing leafs from a speedway reverse eye front spring is safe. I removed 2 leafs and it seems good. I'm trying to get the ride hight low but not so low I have to notch the frame for the spring travel. Any ideas and tips would help thanks . 20160731_115109.jpg 20160730_102914.jpg

I took two leafs out of mine. But it required a fabricated spacer to clamp it well after.
I did have to notch my frame with two leafs out though. I cut the section out in one piece, flipped it, welded it back in with minimal pieces to close gaps and ground it smooth. It didn't take too much time.

do not remove short top leaf - remove every other - do not get carried away with removing leafs - a lot of of weight, etc relying on the spring pack. shocks will not compensate for weak spring rating - might de-arch leafs

Why are you removing leaves when you don,t have all the weight in the car?

You still have access to the frame, raise the front cross member an inch or two to get it lower and still have some ride.

Trying to get my suspension where I want it to sit when loaded. I need to know where the hair pins are going to bolt to the frame. And how long the shocks will need to be. I figured I can add back a leaf or change the spring later to keep the Finnish ride hight I want. I still need a rear end and rear springs to Finnish the rear of the frame.

What are you building? How much will it weigh? Looks like 28 -34 front end with Model A style front crossmember.
I don't think your crossmember can be any higher than it is now. How much do you want or expect spring to deflect? Hairpin position will be determined by how you are attaching to frame and the caster you set up. With adjustable hairpins you can change caster but you want to keep it within bounds of spring and shackle position. A lot of questions need to be answered before you can move forward. Good luck

I think you will need to notch the frame. You have a 3" frame rail by the look off it and A/32's were only about 2 1/4 " where the spring crosses and at that need notching with leaves removed. You are already 3/4 " closer to the frame with the spring than that..

I WOULDN'T REMOVE LEAFS FROM THE SPRING TO GET IT LOWER. TAKE IT TO A SPRING SHOP AND HAVE IT DE-ARCHED. THE SPRING YOU HAVE FROM SPEEDWAY HAS A LOT OF ARCH IN IT. POSSIE SPRING WOULD BE A BETTER BET TO GET IT LOW. NOTCH FRAME

As post 10 says, or get another spring with less arch.

I'm running without the top leaf and second leaf up from the main. Not to lower my truck, but to soften the ride. Too rough of a ride beats everything to pieces. Probably 10,000 trouble free miles since the last leaf was removed. Mine is also based on a '36 Ford cab.
