If I want to lower the front end of my 1948 coupe about two inches how safe is it to remove leaves from the spring setup and how many and which ones. Thanks
Being a traditional hot rod place, I'm going to assume it's a FORD! But, I have been caught with this so many times on this place with similar thread titles it's just as likely to be an International pickup.
Unlike many guys that post on this site... this gentleman did fill in his profile and it appears he has a 1948 Ford Coupe. I think I would remove one or two short springs at the top of the pack and maybe a reversed spring would help. HRP
Since you're new, start with the best - drop the axle. You learn to cobble stuff AFTER you learn how to do it right.
If you take out leaves,it gets weaker too and lowers it,but now that is a weaker spring=it will bottom out much EZer,not just cuz u have less room.but cuz it takes less bump to move more from drop in spring rate. So rearking spring is a better way,or use a droped axle
so, guess that it is a Ford. do not remove the top short leaf. do not remove two that are touching each other - remove only two. will lower about an inch. want to lower more can de-arch springs too. that is about it unless you run shorter than original size tires, like maybe a 205/60/15. 235/60/15 for rear.. for handling need front panhard bar & stabilizer bar. for front shocks use rear shocks from a early 60's Corvette - Tokico gas shocks work good. always can go with mild dropped axle, like a 3" instead which in reality will give you closer to two inches. . can not go real low if you want to be able to turn wheels. might as well add disc brakes while everything is apart. upgrading to a better steering box would not hurt.
