you should not put any additives in a compressors oil , compressor oil is straight weight, non detergent oils , partially to prevent coking of the rings and valves .

My compressor locked up yesterday. Low oil seized the crank bearing. I could kick myself in the ass, been a while since i checked it. Cheaper to buy a new pump than rebuild it

I use synthetic in mine. It runs smoother and faster due to less friction. In 5 years have had no problems.

  5. I run the ingersol rand synthetic

  6. Champion brand air compressor manufacturer offers both conventional and synthetic type pump oils.
A recent conversation I had with a Champion dealer recommended to use non-detergent 30 weight oil if the Champion oil wasn't available. Just as an example of what one compressor manufacturer sells.
I like Lucas and I use it and sell it. I wouldn't use it in an air compressor application.

Thanks to this thread I went and checked the oil in my compressors. Everything OK, but it had been a while since I looked.

Had an old 30 gallon Craftsman compressor that started knocking. I had already bought a new 60 gallon upright. So I drained the oil and put some 85-140 gear oil in it and gave it to my neighbor.
I told him about the knock and said he would run it until it died and then replace the compressor.
2 years later that old compressor was still knocking and still pumping up tires and running a blow gun. My neighbor was in his 80's and fixed lawn mowers.

if its been more than a year or two and you use it often or its brownish black , change it . my friend has a compressor his grandpa owned ( Ingersol) thats never been gone thru other than valves ( unloading type ) because the oil is changed regularly , but I know of a shop near me that has gone thru several compressor pumps in 3 years due to lack of maintaince , ( black or non existant oil )
