I was wondering what I may have here, I always assumed it was 1932 ford however, I googled images and they look very different and they appear to not have a center split. Next I tried 39/40 ford and it looks different again. Any help would be appreciated. Brom

  2. Looks more like a 1930-31-32 Chrysler product item. They fold and have 12 holes. Here is a similar item with smaller holes. 1931 chrysler002.jpg

  3. I've never seen a deuce luggage rack that folds in the middle. They usually have 3 rows of 4 holes and the bracketry looks wrong.

I spent many years at Hershey looking for early Mopar parts, and looking at the show cars there.

I also looked at many racks. If you look at that car that 31Dodger posted, see that there are two holes drilled in each half between the first and 2nd square. Those total 4 holes were to screw a permanent trunk to, and every Mopar I ever saw had them.

The different brands of Mopar cars had the same rack that he posted, but each car brand used different folding arm locations.

I am certain your rack is not Mopar. The end brackets seem to fit a round pipe rear frame spreader bar. It may be aftermarket, and those are very lightweight in design, both the rack and the brackets will seem thinner and cheaper.

Thanks F&J for the info. Whatever this is they must have been popular in Australia because I have 2. My other one has a spreader bar and Im sure it was once on a 32 ford sedan but these were both collected by my Father and hes not here to ask. Again thanks...Brom.

Big Al is right with that. The Aussie luggage racks differed from the US ones. When Eddie Ford shipped the 32 Phaeton to Dick Scrithfield in the early 60's it was a 5 wheel equipped car with that luggage rack. Dick turned it into a 6 wheel equipped version but did not use the luggage rack as it was "not correct" for the US. Instead he sourced a US version which is the non- folding type referred to by lurker mick. BTW hang onto that spreader bar as they are very desirable as the only original spreader bar made by Henry that you can use on a hot rod. I think the John Mearns coupe has one and it got a special mention. I had one on my coupe but had to give it up to #1 son so he could use it with the rack on his Tudor.
