I finally got around to registering. I'm 41 wife, daughter, and lifetime gearhead living in central mo. Took my first ride in a T-bucket at age 8 hooked ever since. My current project is an ugly old 57 international pickup. My dad bought it in 73 and pulled his hair out teaching me to drive it several years later. Love the pics and tech here know several locals looking forward to meeting others. Let the beating begin. Pool
Welcome Missouri! Your definately coming to the drags then yes? It's in your backyard practically!http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/announcement.php?f=5
Well whattaya know! Another Binder fan, I have been a lurker on the H.A.M.B for quite some time, but seeing your truck has made me get off my **** and register as well. When I figure out how to post pics I will let you see my "latest" 1956 1/2 ton short bed on an 1987 S-10 ch***is. How did you get yours so low? It looks *****in!
Doubledawg, Welcome and nice to hear from another binder fan. I can't wait to see your truck, don't see many mid 50's IH's. The stance you asked about was done by Zing the front frame and adding a mustang II crossmember. On the rear I notched the frame, removed two leafs and flipped the rear to the top. Now tell me about yours. Keep in touch and remember..."It may be an old corn binder but it beats the heck out of a stinkin rice grinder". Pool
Hey Pool I finally figgered out how ta upload pics. Here's a couple of shots of my newest beast. I had just sold my old school '28 tudor project in anticipating a change of homes ( who wants to have to move an entire car when its apart and in boxes!) and was not even looking for a new project, when I came across an ad for my Binder. Had no idea what one looked like and had to go online just to see a picture (it took a while to find one, you're right there's not many binder builders out there). It was complete, it was cheap, it was solid and most of all it was neat! I figured it would be easier to move as a complete vehicle than my dis***embled model A. I left it alone for the Fall and Winter months and started to work on it after we moved. It is currently on a 1987 S-10 long bed frame, with no wheelbase changes. It is going to run a 305/TH700R-4 combo, very basic but fun. Body mods will consist of frenching the headlights, a smooth tailgate and maybe a custom grill of some sort as mine is pretty rough and I have had no luck finding a decent replacement. It was pretty solid as even the floors will not need much repair other than for some work on the toe boards, but they will probably need to be modified for trans clearance anyways, the only other rough parts are the right side running board and rear fender as someone backed into them at some point. Wheels will be either chrome reverse or steelies like yours. I have recently had to curtail my work on this project as I now have another project to work on, my new son(almost 6 months old now) so this has slowed progress on the Binder somewhat. Hopefully, in a few years he will want to spend quality time with his daddy out in the garage building cool stuff like the go-kart I have hanging in the rafters! Preparing and learning the skills that will be required for us to build him the *****inest car in his high school parking lot. I can hardly wait! How far along is your truck? I can't tell if it' a driver yet or not. but it looks like it's getting close. What plans do you have for it, color, drivetrain, interior etc?
How ya doin? Welcome to the hamb. Have you heard of Out Back Parts in Spokane Wa ? I got all my parts from there when i lived there. Rj is a wealth of info on the corn binders. I've had two 67 travellall's (barn door@ tail gate) 65 scout and a 73 traveler.
Doubledawg, Boring as it sounds I've got a cheap 350/turbo 400 to just get it running and dependable. Not real sure about color but I'm leaning toward a flat deep metallic blue but I'm open to suggestions. Would like the factory bench done in a nice tuck and roll. I have a pullmax type nibbler with louver dies that I'm planning to wear out punching the hood, tailgate and a custom roll pan. I still have a long way to go so you never know what might change. I'm not sure but I think I might have seen your truck some where on the net have you posted it any place else? Nice start. I considered putting mine on a S-10 fame at one time how do you like it? Was it difficult? Don't Know what you think of it but I thought about using the grill out of a later 57 to 58(maybe 59). The grills look almost identicle to ours but don't have turn signals in them. You'd have to come up with a custom signal but,the grills mount the same. This would give you a few more years to search thru since parts are scarce. I would like to follow your progress so keep in touch. Pool
Hey Pool, thanks for the tip on the grills, as I said I'm no expert on the binders as I had to go online just to see what one looked like before I went and looked at the one I bought but this could be a great tip. I haven't had the chance to take any measurements on one but I was even thinking about looking at 55/57 chev p/u grills as they have the same general shape, I'm just not sure about the height and width, it may need to be sectioned. but they would be a lot easier to track one of these down as I believe they are repro'd by several places. Just a thought. I have only just mounted the body on the S-10 frame so I haven't gotten all the details worked out. The track width is a little narrow which I hope to fix with wheel offset, but that seems to be the biggest problem. The wheelbase was out by about an inch, which was fixed by drilling a new offset hole in the spring pad on the axle. Other than that, a little bit of steel tubing for the new body mounts and raising the bed floor for kickup clearance (after blasting the bed floor it was pretty rough with hundreds of pinholes so I was going to have to cut it out and replace it anyways) and the job was very close to being done. I wiil keep in touch as I make any further progress, you keep in touch and let me know if you have anymore good Binder tips like the grill info. Thanks.
