B1gDaddy, my comment of loving the smell of money refers to my love of high quality craftsmanship...which equates to large dollars spent in fabrication.

Also, don't let anyone tell you what engine/tranny combo to use. When I built my traditional 3w, I used a hydraulic roller cammed 327/Richmond T-10/Winters QC combo because I wanted to drive the piss outta my coupe...and I did.

    love your build...

Love this build thread so far, nice work.
    Well done.

  5. After some measuring and a few trial fits, I have the front end of each X drawn, welded and attached to the rear half permanently. Installation went pretty easy and now working on figuring out the brake and clutch situation before I get too far. Looks like I'm going to need a relief notch for the clutch pedal to swing into.

Love it.. No boxing, all strength from the X, clean as hell... but looks like it belongs there. This makes a compulsive overbuilder like me rethink a few things.
    Thank you for the updates.

Love it when you bring something for show and tell, Steve. Amazing work on the crossmember!

Wow! Just found this thread. Rudy did a great job on the body, Steve's doing a great job on the frame. Steve is a professional, this is what he does for a living. He takes the time out to show people how he does this stuff. Doesn't have to, he just does. The knowledge shared here is precious.

And still some want to detract from the whole thing.

Steve, loving the build, loving the how to video, and completely blown away by the animated image of the x member rear section.

Hoping to be over your way next year, I'll be knocking on your door for definite.

    Mart.

    Mine too!

El P, thanks for your previous help with several questions I had about my Mustang II. I love this build and that you're building YOUR car the way YOU want. Keep it coming!

  14. First off, click and play the video.

Ok, here we are with the music going, imagine the heat of a mid-August Phoenix summer and you wearing thick leather gloves and wielding an Oxy/Acetylene torch with a rosebud tip.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The X is nearly done save for some bracing and final welding. You could see from the previous shots that the very front of the of the legs did not have the attachment plates tacked in. I drew up and cut those from 1/4" plate, drilled the holes and tacked them in place to cement the X and then could move on to my next issue... the brake and clutch system.

I new that the clutch arm was going to give me some fits and because of the toe board location it would cut through my newly created front leg of the X. But I wanted to sort out a few things with the '39 clutch pedals first and then take care of the swing travel needed.

I disassembled the brake bracket and arms then heated up the clutch arm close to the pivot boss and straightened out some wiggles it had. These parts had been abused at some time and needed some tlc to get everything sorted out. I missed the first shots of squaring up the arm to get the pedal inside the cowl and missing the frame, but as you can see the arc was off. With some careful heating and a bit of manipulation, I got the arc correct so it will swing through a smaller hole in the floor.

Back in place you can see how it hits the X and is now a bit too close to the brake. I changed the brake pedal a bit also so that it hits the toe board square and just looks better.

I still need to adjust the arc a bit but it's close now. But the bigger issue is the pedal placement. I could lengthen the arm, instead I chose to change the end where the pedal attaches. I drew up a new arm end and cut it from 1/2" steel. Drilled and tapped a 1/4" pipe thread for the pedal to screw into. Sliced off the extra bits and TIG welded the end on and shaped it with a rat tail file to look a bit more correct.

Now it looks proper. Heights and spacing are good and nothing hits.

  15. Nothing significant with the vid, I just dig it.

Now that I have the pedals in place where I want them, I need to make room for the clutch to swing into. I brought out my Mythbusters blue paper and silver pencil and sketched up a few different ideas and came up with a loop to the back out of 1/2" plate and to cut out the crossmember. I had to dissassemble the entire system to do this, but I needed to weld up the front attachment plates as well.

Here is the photo progression, sorry, no blue paper pictures.

HotrodRon stopped by and took pictures of my balding head while welding

And while the X was all apart, I welded and finished the other side too. Time to reassemble the whole thing again. It goes together pretty easy in spite of the 36 bolts currently holding it all together.

That's it for this week, the rear suspension is up next!

Great answer to some of these low post mouth breathers who don't even own a real rod but want to knock a top notch build because they think it will up their creds as a "traditional car guy" garage full of Mustangs or no.

At this moment we have a Hamber stuck on the other side of Missouri from the Hamb Drags trying like hell to find a water pump for a 401 Buick. A lot cooler engine than a 327 Chevy in some guys books but being stuck half way between home and the event you have been looking forward to for the last year really sucks when you can't get a new part except possibly by UPS red label in the morning and then turn around and go home because you missed the event.

All that bs aside, this is one hell of a build with some really nifty pieces being designed. I think I may just have to get in line for one of those X member setups when they get perfected and if they come available. I'll be following this build to the end.

  22. I saw the breakdown earlier this morning and thought nearly the same thing.

I've been shaking uncontrollably from lack of windshield time in my truck, and right now I should be stealing Shiner Bocks from my Texas friends in the host hotel parking lot. Been cruising the HAMB looking for the offbeat commentary from those attending in an attempt to cure the craving.

At least I covered in hot rod dirt.

  24. ElP would not be caught dead in bud light but shiner bock is the drink of choice for him or fruity tiki drinks. The pictures do not do the frame justice you have to see it in person. B1gDaddy you are going to have one bad ass car. Like needlouvers said earlier we are gong to get along just fine when you come into town and we take you for good Mexican food and drinks to celebrate your new car.

Those videos are priceless so bad ass.

  30. Polaco I am so deeply offended by that car. I can't believe you of all people would post a gennie traditional build on this board.

Neat build my friend, keep it tight.
