man , love idea of buildin a real live hot rod that you can actually beat on.without worryin about some weak spindly banjo rear or museum piece of an engine crumblin apart.small block chevys rule!! ha ha !! im dreamin of a similar build ...one day.keep on keepin on.

  3. I'm working behind the scenes. Just about got the threaded bungs in the wishbones. Taking pictures and video as I go. I think the video elements will have to wait for the weekend when I can spend a bit more time processing.

    Pics will go up soon.

  5. Steve, I have been meaning to stop by and introduce myself to you. Went thru PHX today coming back from the HAMB drags but was tired as hell. I see this and wonder if I would have been interupting your work. I am hauling a car to Long Beach Thursday and coming back thru to pick up my quikie in PHX. I'll be there Friday sometime. Love to check out the build on my bro's old dream project. What say you?

  6. Whenever you guys are in town, stop and have a look.

Working on the rear suspension, I have a feeling this frame may have been under an A-V8 at one time as it's been cut off just ahead of the rear crossmember. Who ever put the rear horns back on got them a half inch too far forward and the rear body bolts don't line up. So they got hogged out pretty good and there are some ugly welds that need attention.

My biggest concern is the rear crossmember. To get the car to sit like it did and still have some suspension travel the reworked stock '32 rear had to go. I discussed this with Anthony and we both felt our only option is an A style rear spring. At least the Winters QC clears the stock replacement tank, barely!

I set up the F350 tie rod ends in my trans mount/wishbone mount and measured at 20º back to the center of the axle and subtracted 1.5" for the bungs I was to machine, then cut the 35/36 rear wishbones to that dimension. I then stuck the fresh cut end in the press and pressed the ends round. Then hammered in the bungs and TIG welded them.

Working on the other end I mocked the bones up in the relation I wanted them and drew up some new axle brackets to make the connection. Plasma cut them from 3/8" stock, reamed and dressed for installation. I set my pinion angle and made damn sure everything was square.

  7. Rear axle somewhat set in place for now I could start taking dimensions and creating the spring and crossmember I wanted to use. The spring is very similar to an A rear. The crossmember is something else entirely. You will notice some holes for my upper shock mount and that it will also be a bolt in when I'm done.

Parts drawn, nested and CNC cut from 3/16" HRPO steel. Dressed and bent I tack welded the parts together then MIG welded all the joints. I went back and chased the outside visible fillets with the TIG so it has a nice finished appearance. Sanded and cleaned up, I need to get the old one out and mock this one up so I can design the end plates and the rest of the upper shock mounts. I also need to drill the four holes in the flanges for the U-bolts...

  9. Missed having a Super Seafood combo and settled for a ham sandwich on rye. Going to the in-laws tonight, home made lasagna and must see newborn shop cats.

  10. Oh man... What a beauty rear crossmember!, I never liked so much the look of the model A rear crossmember on the 32 frame, But you know what is the correct look for that frame!! execellent build!!

...Next week for sure! My grease/blood sugar kinda thing is gettin' low anyway. Gotta have a foam plate of deep fried seafood goodness just to occasionally test my personal health limits anyway! Shop kitties seem to be a thing lately, Olmstead has been adopted too, lately.

  12. MMMM fried food on foam

Anywhoo, I removed the rear crossmember and did a test fit of the new one. These poor frame rails.

Investigating how I want to repair this section of frame rail. I have a few more spots to do also. May as well get them all nailed down now.

Man, I love Pete's about once a year. Of course there is a self loathing period for a while after ingesting but......

Your build threads are truly inspiring....you really do great stuff Steve!

  15. Steve, I just spent the best invested hour and a half of the day looking at this work and the videos. I'm going to see if I can arrange a little road trip there to Phoenix with my friend Ray from Vegas. Fabulous work! Thanks for taking the time to post.

  16. Wow incredible work. The rear cross member looks great.

Those are pretty snappy looking rear drum brakes. Have you mentioned the source already? Gary

Steve, I'm in awe of this build, it is meticulous to say the least. I was wonderin how you put the hump in the top piece of that crossmember before you welded it. Thanks.LB

  25. Tell me that is going in the build with the angle heads that are on the engine now!!!!!!!!

Nice wishbones by the way. After seeing them cleaned up now I am now thinking I should have not sold them but for this car they are perfect. Can't wait to see it on the ground as a roller.

So B1Daddy when are coming out here so we can take you out for beer and mexican food to raise a bottle of beer for that car.

  29. I have a few ideas in mind for some sort of torque rod.

MT Car Products Lincoln style brakes.

  30. Thanks!

I need to do a few more installs to make sure I have the pieces correct, but I do intend on having them avaiable.

The kitties are just two weeks old, cute and wobbly. I should have taken pictures. Just deciding to keep or give them away.
