I took it as the block has been bored....so if it was not squared decked first then bored it will just be a standard rebuild.
I'll second that opinion. A 290 HP crate is less than $2400. They can be made to look like s 283. More power less effort. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app

On a BUDGET? Check the pick-a-part yards for an injected 305. Injected engines show very little bore wear. Check the bearings with plasti-gauge as you disassemble the engine, keep each pair with the rods. Clearences will determine if you need new bearings. Ball-hone the bores, re-ring with molly rings. Regrind the stock cam, new lifters. BRASS freeze plugs. Pull the valves out of the heads, check for oil deposits, cracks. Hand-lap the valves, seats, see how they look - may or may not need a valve job. Use UMBRELLA-style valve seals. Get Summit's block cleaning kit, AND an AMFLO solvent sprayer for final cleaning. Hook-up with a buddy who has built a few over the years, he'll have what you need to borrow, and a 2nd pair of eyes NEVER hurts during the build! Good Luck, Tim
What does "checked out good" really mean? Magnafluxed, crank bearing surfaces, cam lobe wear, cylinder taper, valve stem and guide wear, valve seat and face condition, timing chain and sprockets, piston skirts. Most shops don't do an adequate job of cleaning the block. You would be surprised at the crud remaining in the water jackets. Frost plugs must come out. Probe around existing coolant openings with thin screwdrivers or steel rods as much as you can to dislodge crud. Pressure wash frequently. X2 for David Vizard. Northern Auto has a re-ring kit for 283s for $84.95 includes rings,mains/rods, gasketset. Cam kit with timing set, lifters for $116.99. Check out their web site.
