ok ..so here goes , starting this thread to showcase Madillac....lots of you fellow Hambers have been assisting me with photoshop , repurposing some Madillac parts..etc...so here we go , plans call for a 6 inch chop . its been done before , however all other ones ive seen have been converted from 4 doors to 2 , im going to stay mordoor....next step..round up some square tubing and brace the body , also looking into a new mig welder...I like the new Lincoln 140 , seems like a great candidate and 3 year warranty.....shooting for something like this , drivetrain is goona be full frame swap with not so friendly hamb running gear...you didn't hear me say that...gonna get 30 mpg and have all the modern goodies..shooting for less than 10,00.00 mind you everythind done in house...everthing except maybe wheel alignment., .glass....ha ha ha
starting with this nice solid caddy , got it from Bobby at Superior chrome here in Houston , hes a graet guy and has lots of project cars and parts..check him out....
Color is optional....yellow would certainly be a possibility, looking for custom feel , not silver or blue....gonna be a while to get to paint stage...Probably gonna go for Flatz....
I think I'm good to go with the 140 Lincoln , I've owned them in the past and are really great for home built projects..would be cool if they had a spot weld timer...sometimes I get a little ahead of myself and warpage on sheet metal....
anyone in north Houston have steel tubing and sheet steel leads..used is fine . a scrap yard that sells some...1 to 1/2 inch square and 18 gauge mild sheet..thanx in advance..
Madillac also would like to have an assistant with skills that would like to moonlight for some extra green...thanks in advance again..She's up north by 249 tomb all and Perry rd..77070
Hey hey. Oh yea ,,followed that thread...appreciate the link.....will post some progress pics soon....
Ok , after being flooded out of our home 10 weeks ago we are now back to everyday living...Madillac is awaiting the first cuts so stay tuned...still looking for steel tubing , square or other..anyone have some in N W Houston ?....
The chop is going to give you longer/lower lines; maybe emphasize that with skirts and a deep wine color? (I channeled a couple other items in the photo to give them lower lines but you may want to pass on that )
Ok. . Have some time off from work..getting the car level , front to back , side to side , bought an angle finder....not cornfield customs.....great thread by the way.....will be updated
Slice and dice .....also , still looking for square tubing in north Houston..I may end tacking the doors to keep alignment and this across the b pillar...
No frames like a hard top..how cool is that.....doors posts were chromed steel , actually un bolt on series 60 ..
Door frames are chromed steel.....gotta get used to thread pics , text , details....great time here on the Hamb....
Yeah , we got em...no cheapo deals yet ...seen some vintage low buck pics where they cut of the door tops first..level the car first like I'm thinking ans weld the doors shut...ok you gotta HoUdini to climb inside to reinforce etc..completely doable in a pinch.. troops are assembled and ready to cut...ha ha ha
Is the 2-inch sq tubing just for some internal reinforcement on the body after cutting the top off? If so, that is way more than necessary. Just use what you can find cheap, like angle iron, old tubing, etc. It will be sufficient for that purpose.
