did a search and only found a little info and not realy anything that blew me away or tackled the subject of storing large numbers of magazines. i've got several hundred (at least) and counting scattered about my house and garage in piles, in boxes and in milk crates.
what i'm looking for is a way to store and organize ALL of them in one place. i have a small house and an even smaller garage so that is one concern.
i'm not affraid to build something either, be it a custom cabinet system or something along those lines. i'm gonna be keeping my eyes on the handy man and cabinet building magazines and books as well but if any of you have come across such storage solutions for large numbers of magazines please post them up. pics would be most helpful so don't forget them.

    thanks

Ikea man... Really cheap sturdy standing holders. They also sell doored and doorless cabinets to fit the holders.

Obviously you can find these things elsewhere. I hate the ikea nesting instinct too, but it's a cheap, safe solution.

Don't know if this is something you are interested in, but I keep mine in boxes, by magazine name, labeled for what issues are inside. I use what we call "banker boxes", you buy them at the office supply store. They are folded flat and you assemble and put them in use. I find it helpful when I need to look something up, I can go to the type of magazine that covers that type vehicle. It keeps them organized and out of the way when I don't need them.

  4. Easy... send 'em to me, come look at them anytime you want!

not sure how much access you will need to them or if you just want to store them but the post Office has free priority mail flat rate boxes that are perfect for magazines at 8.5 x 11". they are around 6" tall.

of course these are for priority mail use only so you have to pretend that you will be shipping them out within the next 30 years or so.

On one of the Mad Fab DVDs they did a tour of Von Franco's house/ garage... he had some old store magazine display racks that were loaded with cool old hot rod magazines.

I use stuff like these and a "gorilla rack" from Sam's Club. The g-racks are plenty strong and don't flex. The foot print is about 8 square feet (2x4) or so. Racks are around $55 and the boxes are avalible from our local Office Max.
I just looked at Sam's Club online and didn't see them but I'd check the store to be sure.
The metal filing cabinets are good too but I would'nt buy the cheapies from Wal-Mart or Office Max etc. Go to a second hand store and pic up some comercial grade sets. Lots heavier and I paid around $15-$20 for mine.

Funny you should mention this, I was in a store just this past weekend looking at the plastic storage bins with sealing tops. Looks like there were ones long enough to store three magazine wide and tall enough for probably 4-6 years. I may buy one in the next day or so. I am interesed in the sealing part as I am in Florida where it is hot as crap in the summer and insects can be an issue. Two cardboard boxes weighing about 50 lbs each in my attic isnt cutting it.

  12. As a suggestion for whatever you eventually wind up using(I have mine stored in a couple old book cases with glass front doors),they will sit a lot better if you alternate them(binder facing out;binder facing in).I group mine that way so they are easier to locate.

  13. I too use the racks from Ikea, but mine are made of wood.I think they come in a 2 pack for 3.00..hold about 15-20 standard size magazines(or 3 Rodders Journals..haha)

I have found that 12 pack quart oil cases work well for most regular size magazines.

You could leave them all over every flat surface in the house like I do but it really pisses the mrs off.

I just use cheapo bookshelves and jamb them all in there. Still don't have enough storage space.

Magazine storage boxes can be expensive-like $7 each at Staples. I have gotten some free from libraries-if you ask. Also check any hospitals or universities for their surplus sales-often really cheap. I have built several shelves for my magazines using either rough cut or dimensional lumber. If you want neat, use 1x10 (9.25") for the sides and 2x10 for the shelves. A 3' wide shelf shouldn't need bracing.

  19. ...I built wood cupboards in my basement using Cedar lumber as it's insect resistant and my magazines seem to stay in nice cond. in the winter and humid summer months. No heat in my basement in winter either, but usually it's 50-60 degrees down there in the coldest weather.

When we last moved house, I used copier paper boxes to move my magazines.

They are really too tall, so I just cut them down to about half the height. They work well - so well that most of my mags are still in them 7 years later !

Make friends with someone who works in an office and they are free.

Hot Rod made these binders that held the magazines. It looks impressive having them all in them but really it doesnt seem to be too good for the bindings.

I've been trying to buy clear pages for in 3 ring binders for the magazines that will fit in them. All the others I just have stacked up untill I figure something better.

If you stack anything higher than your head, make sure the shelf is fastened to the wall. Seems like a no-brainer-an yet...

I use a lot of yard sale shelves in my collection. I buy large 3 ring binders at yard sales then go to one of the office supply and get what I call spines. they fit inside the mag then the 3 ring fits the note books.that works for the large mags.,and is better than stacking them out in the open.

  28. I have some Ikea binders like posted but for 30 years I have stored them in Milk crates. The large size allows you to run 2 rows. I lay the crate on its sideand stack until it is full, next stack goes next to the first. Flip crate upright and the magazines are fully supported and dont shift.
