More and better photos of the ride the article is featuring. Some of the mags I've picked up I've said to myself "wow this cover car is great I can't wait to see more of it" only to have my hopes dashed because of only having one cruddy photo of the ride.
Here is a idea, Make a magazine with a feel of TRJ (as in quality) use fewer advertisers but charge them MORE. Kinda like the superbowl comercials concept. what is it like a kazilion dollars to air during the superbowl? Also I think there is a lot to be learned from fashion magazines, ads front and rear but not in the 'body' of the mag, also if you charge more for advertising space, they are not going to want to put just a small percentage of there products on there, becuase people will think that is all they sell. Lets go back to the fashion magazine for a moment, in fact if your girlfriend or wife have one laying around take a look at it. Where do the ads start and the storys begin? its kind of hard to tell huh? In fashion you not trying to sell a product you are trying to sell a feeling, feelings that say this persons products represent me, I want to be a billboard and wear their name on my ass. So imagine a great pictorial car magazine with the ads as cool as the features.
There was a mag over here years ago called Hot Rod&Custom U.K. that ran really good tech articles and lots of in progress garage features and vintage tin finds.I had never gas welded before, and I followed an article that covered many pages that showed EVERY single thing to chop an Anglia and included the pressure settings for the oxy/acet and what size tip to use and how and when to hammer and dolly. To some people not a big deal, but more cars were chopped following that story than any number of others put together and the call still goes out for copies of that story even today from guys about to chop and wanting to do it properly. That said,it`s volume that makes the profits and a bright red car on the cover outsells one with a jalopy on there and the majority of the mainstream mag buyers just want to look at pretty pictures and see how near to perfection it is.I think the little books have it sorted and I`ve just sold my entire collection of the mainstream mags. I just buy the little books now as I was buying Street Rodder etc, out of habit and not finding anything to interest me apart from the odd feature. It must be a very hard job to work on a magazine and keep your interest up and come up with features year after year and I really do respect the guys that do it for a living.
