I get a lot of product press releases to put in the new products sention of the Gazette. Most are engine parts that I can't test, but are from reputible companies, so they get run. But I also get ones that I just kind of round-file. They are they ones that are cheesy or seem to good to be real. Well, I got a call from this company a few weeks ago about their "amazing" rust remover. It was non-toxic, bio-degradable, no fumes etc. You don't have to scrub it. When you're done, you can put it back in the main container and use it again. They claimed it removed pounds of rust per gallon. My first reaction was "yeah, whatever." So I tried to blow them off by telling them to send me a sample to try. Well, they did, so I thought I'd try it.

So, last night I filled a shallow bowl with "Evapo-Rust" (that's the real name) and dropped in one of two custy tie rod ends that have been sitting my house outside for years. They looked identical. It didn't quite cover the entire thing but it was close and I didn't really care. I put it in around 6:00 last night and left it until this morning. When I checked it, the liquid (that was originally clear and has the consistency of water) was black and cloudy. I pulled the tie rod end out and just dried it off. NO SCRUBBING AT ALL! This is what I got.

Needless to say, I was amazed! Even the tapered rod part freed up and moves smoothly.I didn't even take the nut off, and it made it's way through the threads and cleaned them under the bolt too.

Maybe you guys already know about this stuff, but I didn't. I'll be buying more of it!

I'll update this post with the info for you when I get in to work in the morning.

Wow! I just checked the Evapo site and I'm going to order some through my employer. Thanks for letting us know about the product. This stuff looks bitchin.

  4. Wow! I will check out their site also. I tried some stuff like that before from ZEP & it also worked like that except it had this nasty smell like battery acid although it was "organic". I had to use it outside & stand upwind from it.I presume this evapo rust does not have a nasty smell to it?:D Gary 4T950 Chevy Guy

Thanks for the heads up. I have heard that this stuff works wonders but have never seen any first hand pics or data. Wasnt this some sort of military item at one point? If its the same, here is a site I had saved in my favorites:
    http://www.orisonllc.com/corrosion/evaporust/evapo-rust.html

I think it has a place to purchase the product and also some technical data info.

    Kirk,

See of they will send ou a patch to try. On their site it has a large pad for bigger areas that cant be submerged. Would work great for a rusty floor I would imagine.

Thanks by the way for the "try it before you buy it!"

Yeah, good idea. There is a slight smell to the stuff. My first impression was vinegar, but I don't think that's what it is.

    The website is www.evapo-rust.com

I used to be a big naval jelly fan, but it's much harder to remove than this stuff. That said, I haven't tried painting over this to see how it reacts and how much actually gets left behind when you think it's all gone.

A local place I've talked to sells Evapo-rust for $18.00 per gallon; see www.orisonlinc.com . I've found it a few bucks cheaper online. According to the propaganda put out it works pretty good. Molasses or vinegar would probably do just as good, but take a little longer.

  18. It's water based with strong detergents which allow the water to penetrate the iron oxide. The water carries a weak chellating compound which takes iron from the iron oxide and bonds it to sulfer molecules in the evapo-rust. This forms Ferric Sulfate which falls out of solution.
I didn't see what the chellating mechanism consists of. Get some PH paper and see where your solution starts and what it reads at the finish.
They warn that dirt and grease slow the derusting process and instruct to clean parts well first.
If you took some of this stuff and a few drops of LSD and put it on your skin... uhh, never mind.

Can the stuff be brushed on a large area? Is it effective this way or does it dry too fast.
    Sounds interesting.

  20. According to them you have to immerse. You don't want the water carrier to evaporate on the item. The water carries away the Ferric Sulfate. After you soak your stuff you rinse it off in water. You can repeat this until you remove all rust and then dip the raw steel again to provide protection from "flash" rusting for up to 2 weeks.

    Only works on ferrous metals.

I use this stuff called PREP & PRIMER that I get at Home Depot in the paint section for controlling rust. About 4 bucks a quart. It's an acid so it is kinda stinky:eek: but easy to use. You brush it on and it converts the rust (iron oxide) into a black surface (black oxide?). I use it on virgin steel to etch the metal for primer and on rusty parts that I don't want to paint. I've also used it on aluminum which isn't easy to paint and it etches the aluminum and the paint sticks pretty well. Here's their website: http://www.jasco-help.com/products/prod_sp.htm#0717-8

I've used that stuff before and it worked great, but it doesn't go quite as far as they claim it does. It does work great though. I recently saw it in small containers in Auto Zone or some other national chain.

I posted something about it and my results a few years ago on the HAMB
