I know some guys have been running the old spindle mount wheels, but what im not sure if if they are primarily for show, or do you drive them all the time? So, for those of you that have cars with spindle mount magnesium wheels, how is it to drive? Any serious concerns about them, now that you have run them? I stumbled on a pair of 18x2.5 Magnesium 12 spokes this week at the swap meet. Anyone know what spindles these fit? I looked for somewhere with specs to ID them and haven't had any luck. Dimensions in the wheels are: 3 1/4" Wide, 2 1/16" Diameter on the outside with a 1/4" thick rib 7/8" into the hub, 2 1/2" Diameter on the inside(axle side) extending in 3/4". I think that should be enouph to ID them, let me know if you need more. (can send some closer pictures if you need them) A little Info on the car to consider when it comes to application: I have been working on my Model A Coupe for a few months now. Doing most of the essential work, patch panels, chassis work and the like. I have a fairly finalized plan for the engine(no engine work has been done, but almost all the rare parts have been acquired.) blown 383 SBC with a 671 built for about 650 hp. loads of old speed equipment, so the wheels are right at home next to this powerplant. Car is very reminicent of an early AA/A, no fenders, pie crust slicks, engine moved back slightly, chopped ect... Here are some pictures for thought: (Right wheel still hasnt been cleaned up, someone painted them Silver?!)
They look great for a drag car or just show car,but on the street with no front brakes? and even if ya had small disk of some type added, them shiny no bit tires are super unsafe..
I run a pair of 12 spoke spindle mounts on one of mine. I shouldn't, and I know better, just cant take them off though. I do drive more defensive with that truck then others knowing my stopping distance is greatly reduced. And btw, it's illegal too.
If you put em on watch out for potholes. Instant busted wheel. I'd advise against it. Not only because no front brakes, but they are weak. Lots of guys looking for those for vintage dragsters and altereds and stuff. JMO.
Anyone with some Magnesium 15x4 Kidney Bean Halibrands looking to work out a deal for some 18x2.5 12 spokes? Still need some info to ID the spindles.
They are either Anglia or early Ford. Anglia are small. Lotsa of those around that most can't use. I have no dims for you. But if you have an early Ford spindle and it's too large than you know what you got. If you want that look I would suggest Radirs. They have 18 inchers that you can put disc's on. Ford spindles
Swap them for some 15" 12 spokes maybe? Those will at least take a decent sized tyre. I had small discs fitted to a pair of the 15"ers using baby Wilwood calipers.
I agree with Curbspeed. Call Radir wheels. They have 12 spoke spindle mounts that are 18x3.5" wide. You can fit a bigger tire, plus they're made of aluminum so they will be safer for street use. Wilwood also makes a front disk kit for the Radir wheels.
My opinion is they look bitchin and that's about all for positive about using on the street. Negative are no front brakes, might be for anglia spindles, limited tire options, and questionable if strong enough for the weight and turning forces. Especially with your blown small block, with radiator and grille shell. Those wheels were intended for light weight drag front ends, going straight. But to me the biggest issue for street is no brakes. Too many distracted cell phone using yelling at kids in the back seat eating and putting on makeup drivers out there where you can't always control how fast you need to stop. Avoiding an accident is a better alternative than surviving an accident.
I didn't notice the orig post was 13 years old, thanks for the catch! I suppose the OP either lived to tell the stories driving on the street or went another choice.
18" were mostly early Ford , 17" were Anglia type. Got to figure that magnesium wheel is close to 60 yrs old by now
