Magnesium wheel ID

    Does any one know manufacture and approximate date on this wheel? Was it called Indy wheel? Thanks Ron. [​IMG]
     
  2. dont think those are magnesium i have 2 that look very simular id swear they are aluminum mine has ridges arouind the rim im kinda looking for 2 more 5X41/2

    Thanks theses are 5- 4 3/4 chevy. I'm not positive but I think they are magnesium. What's the best way to tell? Ron

    i have a set of 14x7 4.75 bolt pattern... mine are aluminum...

  5. well you could try to polish a small area if it starts to resemble chrome they are aluminum magnesium is a DARK gray color

    another way to tell is to shave a small sliver off ofthe back of one and heat it up with a torch magnesium burns green i think... aluminum just melts

    About 3 names as the mold was sold to new companies but I've never seen any magnesium ones. They came in 14" and 15" I was a collector for many years and looked at a bunch over the years. I still have a few.
     
  7. A simple test to check whether a wheel is magnesium or aluminum is to test a spot with ordinary vinegar. The vinegar will interact with magnesium and fizz slightly. It will just lay on aluminum - like water.

    Well aged magnesium turns very dark grey, almost black. Aluminum turns, but not a lot more than the wheels in question.

    The easiest way is simply the weight. At 34% lighter than aluminum, it should be very obvious just by picking up the wheel. However, the oxidation shown in your pictures is not typical of Mg.

    Thanks guys these turned out to be aluminum. Seller was told by his dad they were magnesium and had been been sitting in ba*****t for over 40 years. Lessen learned for me thank again your the best. Ron
