Art Bell is great - he has all the wackos that can't get a nanosecond on 'normal' talk radio. Used to listen to him when HE was actually the moderator - thought my brain was just a bit out of plumb - there are some seriously deranged people out there. As to the actual reversal of the poles - scientifically, there would be some problems with freguency propogation (as already alluded to) and compasses would have to be turned 180° in their gimbals and/or in your hand (if you're a 'deduced reckoning' kinda guy). Magnetism that is induced by rotation in fields should not be affected. Would the northern hemisphere then enjoy the Australis Borealis?

And I Guess our Headlights will start casting shadows, the radio will be listening and the horn will be sucking.

While we are on physics fairy tales; If we had a sphere made of two way glass with the inside reflective and a perfect vacuum, if we shined a light beam inside would it ever stop?

The lightbeam will stop when the batteries run out... or in, I guess.
Why do batteries run in the first place? And why do they run 'out'? Are they in a hurry or something?

Same thing, when a Mod tries to delete this here fine topic, his Delete-button will just Bump the topic up again to the top :D

  8. First off, I don't think I would have let anyone know I listened to Art Bell............but ,to each his own.

  9. Now THERE'S a paradox. Mister green lives in a mansion that consumes enough energy to power a small suburb.

  10. A pole shift is believed to have happened once before in the earths history, and it is inevitable that it will again.
Magnetic north IS moving all the time, every year the Magnetic variation calculation must be changed, although the amount changes depending on where you are in the world. The change is on average 2 - 2.5 degrees every 100 years.
As maps were originally made so that Longitude lined up with magnetic north it became apparent that something was not quite right as ship began sailing into land masses! Hence we learned about Magnetic Variation.
It was decided it was easier to keep a fixed Longitude on the map and in the information add the amount of variation required for accurate navigation each year, rather than re-print a new map for each year.
This gave us the navigation rule, 'My Grandmother Sucks' or M-G-S, when calculating Magnetic to Grid one must Subtract the variation leaving the obvious Grid to Magnetic, add G-M-A (There is one for adding variation but for the life of me I cant remember it).

My question is, what will happen to people with Bi-polar disorder? Will they change from being normal to angry or will they be angry and change to normal?
    Doc.

Sunspots run in 10-12 year cycles...have been for huundreds of years...it has not been proven that the earth's magnetic field was reversed thousands of years ago because of lack of sunspots...there are fear mongers in every aspect of human history...if you don't believe that, check out Nostradamus's predictions and magnets on refrigerator doors will eventually cause the motor to quit...

  12. Roger thats sorta true, they believe it happened due to geographical changes in magnetic rock but the reason for it is most definitely unknown. But I mean, really who knows!!
Some also think that the earth will 'tumble' out of its reputedly stable axis of rotation. As the earth revolves there are 'wobbles' in the axis, these also go through cycles (No idea how long). The crackpots think that the wobbles will get so bad we will one day just wobble off into space.
Thats ok, I wanna meet the hot green chicks Captain Kirk always seemed to get into bed!
    Doc.

PS, does this make me a nerd because it interests me??

    Darn, wheres my pocket protector?
