    Alright. so I have run the VIN numbers on my car and it won't tell me model, also when i purchased my car it had no outside trim from the beltline down and the holes were welded up. There's no real markers on my car to designate which model it is. It's a 2 door coupe post with a 223 I6 and a 3 speed on the column. The dash is engine turned, and it has a push ****on radio. i'm just not sure which model it is at the end of the day after i search and search the car for information.

    there were so many models in 54 and i know that it's not a sunliner or crown victoria (those are obviously not the same here)
    but as far as Mainline Crestline and Customline go, i just don't know how to narrow it down.
    any information guys?
    thanks! xoxo

    Did you do the vin at lovefords.org? They will tell you everything about it with a vin #. I thought I had a customline till I did that. Search this group for mainline in keyword and you will see my post about "I thought I had a customline"

    Look at the VIN, you see one of these numbers?
    70A Mainline Tudor
    70B Customline Tudor
    72C Mainline Business Coupe
    72B Customline Club Coupe
    60B Crestline Victoria HT

    There wasn't a Crown Victoria in 1954.

    Yes, the VIN tag should tell exactly what body style you have. It's kinda hard to tell from your album pics but it looks almost like a body style 72 (business coupe). Here's a sample of the VIN tag and where to locate the body code (along with a lot of other info):

    Here is my thread where I talked about it

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=7945

    Mine deciphered like this

    Decoding the vin

    A = 223 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine
    6 = 1956
    R = San Jose, California ***embly plant
    G = Ford Mainline and Customline series code
    70A = Ford Mainline Tudor Sedan body style code
    G = Meadowmist Green
    BE = gray cloth and vinyl interior
    20B = scheduled for production on February 20, 1956
    780 = order number

    ctfortner- I just did the request at lovefords.org so i'm waiting on that.
    but from what you posted later,
    mine should read as
    A=223 (correct)
    4=1954 (correct)
    F= ? i think it was california. but not sure where yet.
    G= Ford mainline and Customline series code
    1= There should be a 70's number here based on Yblockhead's post. but not the case.
    4= and the numbers from here on out don't seem to do me any good either.
    9=
    6=
    7=
    4=

    hopefully i'll get somewhere with this from the lovefords.org

    i've only found the numbers, not the nice FORD tag with the serial and body etc. numbers and codes. If it is flat, i'm ***uming it was primered over by the previous owners. they shot EVERYTHING flat black...

    would that tag be in the door jam on the body behind the front fender on the drivers side?
    if so, i've seen it, and was able to lightly sand off the raised numbers where i recovered the vin info, however, since it was all painted, any flat printed on info is probably lost.

    yes, that the VIN tag - on the A pillar below the windshield. And you'd have to clean it off if it's been painted over cuz it's flat, not stamped. Mine was the same way on one of the tags - you can get to the original #s if you're careful. Yes, I think the VIN itself only gives the model type, but not the specific body STYLE - which would be a 70x or 72x. But I might be wrong, I'd have to read up on it a bit more in the parts catalogs.

    Yeah what you need is the rest of the info on that tag like Ron said

    Body - Color - Trim - Production

    All of them may not look the same, not sure. The 149674 in your vin is likely the number it was made. Yours may have been the 49,674th one made that year, i know in 56 the first was # 100,001. Anyway those numbers still wont tell you what body you have, you probably already know as much as you can until you get the body code which will tell the story. Hello paint thinner :)

    Please send me the codes that are on the data plate. The VIN tells us only this
    A4FG149674
    A = 223 cubic inch 6-cylinder engine
    4 = 1954
    F = Dearborn, MI ***embly plant
    G = Ford Mainline and Customline series
    149674 = the 49,674th Ford scheduled for production at Dearborn for the 1954 model year. The first was 100001

    If you haven't registered over at 1954Ford.com, I recommend it.

    If it has trim holes welded up on the doors, then it wasn't a Mainline....they had no trim on the doors below the belt trim.

    All the 54's had the engine turned dash panel

    Most of the Crestlines left the factory with the V8.

    Chances are you have a former Customline.

    WOW. i spent an hour on that site... i'm definately in!!! i was especially to see that Gordy Brown and Luke Karosi were in the photo album. i really admire Gordy's workmanship and ROAD TIME in that car. i've seen it myself in California multiple times in different locations, and coverage of it all over the country. Luke's an amazing guy keeping up with the WCK newsletter and now printing for DIEHARDS for Gary and Mary Minor...
    i'll be proud to join!!!

    thanks for the heads up!

    haha.. i tried using some thinner to remove the paint from my tag. it took it all off in a small area... so i gotta try something else so that i can retrieve any information that is still there.
    ugh. i can't believe someone would be so stupid to paint over that!!!! IDIOTS!

    You might try some DuPont rubbing compound,it may take a while but should leave the tag intact.

    I see that you have chrome front and rear window trim. My mainline 53 does not have that. Maybe a 54 thing?

    Hey RustyFORDS!
    I did find a fourdoor in a junkyard in Rock Springs WY that has the tag in the door jam. it's a crestline with an inline 6 223 in it.

    gotta get the buffing compound out this weekend...and play with some chemicals to try to recover mine... I really wanna know man!!!!

    Lanny,the 52-54 Mainlines did not have the trim from the factory it was available as a dealer ordered option,Customlines on up came with the trim.If you need to replace the windshield channel moulding all suppliers show them with and without the groove for the trim.
