Ok.. I gotta get from Wilm, NC, to Hamilton, Ontario, CA, and back, and I plan on doin it the first week of December. Crazy... yeah of course. But that's me. I'll be drivin a Santa Fe, mostly empty, and towin a trailer up totally empty, and full of a cad engine on the way back (but prolly able to fit more stuff on the trailer too). If anybody needs any parts moved northward, or southward, I'd be willing to edit my route a bit, for minimal donations to my "save the cadillac" fund. If you seriously need somethin moved, lemme know quick, because I'm goin one way or another. Thanks Peace Chris
not exactly sure where I'll be crossin the border yet.. got any suggestions? as for rims and tires.. shouldn't be a problem. Just lemme know details. dates have changed a bit, as my wife is now involved. Looks like it'll be Wilm NC, to Hamilton, Ontario, to Chicago, Illinois, to Wilmington, NC we had planned on driving to Chicago for x-mas, and she want's us to combine trips to save about a 1000 miles. Makes sense I guess. Peace Chris
Take the Queenston/Lewiston bridge. Avoid the bridge that crosses Niagara Falls. The Q/L bridge will take you almost directly on to the Queen Elizabeth Highway and right into Hamilton. Let me know if you need more directions....I'm not far from Hamilton.
I hear you have to have a Passport now to go North into Canada. Dont know for sure.... Thanks to a few assholes who decided to run planes into buildings.
petejoe... word I heard is that that goes into effect as of January 1st, so it shouldn't affect this trip. Also that old passports are just as good. Drivers Licence, SS card, and Birth Certificates are always a good idea when crossing the border.
Are you aware of the hoops that you have to jump through when bringing anything across the border? Customs can be a real bitch of a time if you don't do it right. Just make sure you know what you are doing and exactly the origin and costs of the item you bring across, most automotive items are allowed across if for personal use, beyond that they need to be declared and pay taxes as such. You are also allowed to bring back some of that good beer, whiskey and smokes... etc. Check with the duty free shops, alot of good deals on that stuff that is banned from sale hear in the States.
Bring me a Timmy's. Large regular, please. The border shouldn't be a problem. Proper ID (license, birth certificate) is fine and you will need a bill of sale for anything your bring over. Car parts over 20 years old are duty-free under NAFTA. If you are bringing property for anyone else you will need some other customs declaration forms. PM me if you need info. I might be able to point you in the right direction. 36couper is right, Queenston/Lewiston is a good crossing. The Peace Bridge at Buffalo is a bit easier to navigate to and fairly decent to cross; avoid the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls. Too many tourists, and it's pain.
Donkey chains on avoidin the Rainbow bridge at niagara. Funny that my wife had mentioned checkin out naigara, as I though it'd be a lil more fun in the summer sometime, and kinda a waste for a short stop this time. Thanks for the heads up on customs. I'll have to check out and make sure I get "proper" paperwork, as I don't want any trouble. And it's definetely for personal use, unless they consider my "limo" service a business. Shouldn't be a problem since so far I've had ONE customer and he was related and I wouldn't let him pay Thanks again Peace Chris oh and as for the beer and smokes... I'll prolly pick up a few cubans if I can get away with it (from the wife... not worried bout customs)
