Hey there. Another thread so that I can get some information from all of you. I am building my model a frame, and really want to keep my banger in there for economic reasons as well as weight reasons right now. However, if I ever do want to upgrade, I do not want to tear everything back apart. So, will a model a banger work with a 32 k member? If not, what should be done?
I'm not a banger guy but I thought a,b,c motors were very similiar externally , if that's the case ... You would use the 32 k with later pedals and trans , but I would do a mock up of a v-8 flathead for the motor mounts on the pumps and proper radiator clearance
Well, I would love a 21 stud or a 59ab. Prefer a 21 stud but money is tough on those. I would even consider a 17 stud. I have not given it much thought as I know I am keeping the banger for at least a little while. The new tardel book has me thinking though. Btw, I like the banger, but everyone seems to upgrade at some point, so maybe I will want to in the future and I want the capability.
Okay, if you aren't going OHV in the future, thirtytwo's advice is golden. As I recall even though Tardel's roadster has a '32 frame there's info in the book about building an AV8 using a Model A frame as well. Great project coverage, by the way. Good luck with it!
I would love to ohv the banger. I just want to keep the possibilities open though. If I move the trans or engine from where it is now, I would need a different torque tube. So, will I need to change the trans now, as well as torque tube and pedal setup?
The later bangers are more desireable for better internal parts and I think a better oil system... But a running A motor is worth $ so where you are at right now I think I would just look for any kind of running flathead and just do the car with that and be done with it... I bet you can find a running v-8 in your area for 400-800 And probably sell a running model a motor for 200-500 I've never used a stock A rear but I have heard of a few who have My honest opinion is to just bite the bullet and do the av8 swap now , you can use f-1 cross and pedals , and find a later rear ...besides shortening the torq tube that stuff is cheap and ez and you will have a good hi-way car
Adding the V8 is really only bolting in a K member and welding in a pair of engine mounts. I'd go the easy route here and work with what you have for now if your banger and transmission are in good working order and keep an eye out of a usable 32 K member (Vern Tardel sells a kit for this too for $600 for the K and $65 for the motor mounts if you don't want to make them yourself) and an affordable running flathead.
