If you would like to reduce the weight of your Dillon, Hen-Rob, Cobra, DHC 2000 welding torch you need to watch this video. I will show you step by step how you can remove almost a half pound of weight.
Nice work, I'd be too afraid too ! I can see though were the loss of the weight would be a great advantage when doing long p***es. ..
It can be a bit heavy in the long run. Still, I think I'll leave mine alone, if I get another one I might try removing some weight on that.
I had a spare torch, so I spent an afternoon on it. I did it without de-soldering or extensive hand work and still approached the 1/2 lb weight savings. As shown here I used a different lightening pattern than Jere on the handle. I have not used it since the modification but the difference is noticeable. Lighter hoses would also be a desirable addition to reduce fatigue.
Downsides are basically about the size and weight of it. Upsides... Is said to use less gas then conventional torches. (I have not used other torches enough to know if that is correct.) Very nice, calm and focused flame, providing focused heat. Great for welding, less good for large area heating to bend 2" pipe... Impressive cutting capabilities. Lots of demos on youtube.
