I don't have a pile of 33-34 driveshafts to cut and weld but I do have a couple of spare ends torched from a later solid shaft. What would be a good wall thickness and type of tubing to make a driveshaft from? I'm hoping to get lucky and find something with an ID that the stubs will just slide into...doubt I'll get that lucky.

What is a good replacement for the retaining pin that gets drilled out when you remove a driveshaft?

  2. Kevin,
I know I guy in Wyondot (SP?) that has a whole pile of driveshafts, if you wanna go dig. I don't recall the wall thickness and don't have a leftover chunk to mike. But it's not real thick. Actually I got a couplke of old drive shafts here that we could cut.
Whats the diameter you're looking for?

Don't really know the diameter. I'm not at home so I can't go measure. Just to clarify I'm talking torque tube driveshaft here - so smaller dia. than typical Hotchkiss stuff...open drive lines are spawn of the Devil. If your friend has a pile of the early stuff I'd like to dig for a '33-'34 piece.

This guys been collecting everyones throw away stuff since who knows when.?
I'm going over to look for carbs in the near future. I'll give him a call before I go.
If you can get me a dia later on I'll check into getting some mechanical tubing, its straighter and closer to round. If we're lucky we can get it for a grin. [IMG] I got lots of those laying around. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] With the smaller dia you'll probably have to have a thicker wall than a later open style shaft.
    Ah hell I tried. [IMG]

Grim, use the right size drill rod to replace the drilled out pin, or some places sell pins in different sizes, should be at industrial supply houses.--TV [IMG]

    from Missouri

    I used a 34 driveshaft and a female splined end of a 40
    driveshaft.
There was .045 play between the two pieces.
The O.D. of the 40 splined stub was 1.460
The I.D. of the 34 driveshaft was 1.550
The O.D. of the 34 driveshaft was 1.750
The wall thickness of the 34 driveshaft was .100

I used 0.45 shim stock to center the 40 stub in
the 34 driveshaft and welded it up. (sort of a like
    adding a chill ring).

    Hope this helps,
    Mike
