Just when the general discussion is about people wanting a car lift I'm happy to report that I got rid of mine today! It was a very old Walker four post, ramp style, cable operated lift. I finally decided I was tired of banging my head into it and more and more it seemed like it took up more floor space then it was saving by being able to stack two cars. Also, it just made it more hassle to get to the car that was on the top, so my T Roadster that was on the lift probably got driven about 10 miles all summer.

I have some more clean up and organization to do but now the 24'x32' "storage" side of my shop will have two cars side by side. Here's a photo of the space now unobstructed by the four post lift.

The reorganizing will also make it so I can store my FED on it's trailer during the off season freeing up space in the "working" side of my shop.

Lots of guys short on space put the lift outside. You still have it, can be used for its intended purpose of fixing cars, and not just a storage rack. I just got my 1st lift, I hope its a great thing for me. New shop, not done yet, so its a big thing in the way for me too, but it will get used!

I bought a drive on lift a few years ago. Love it. Use it to work on cars with out having to crawl on the floor to set arms like on a 2 post lift. Also when not working on cars I can store 2 cars in the space.

I have a 4 post. Yes, it limits the room in that stall, but my back loves not having to crawl under a car 10X in 1 day.

Having a 4 post that is designed to be moved with wheels (like Backyard Buddy) allows easy location changes, inside or out.

My 4 post antique lift like yours is outside and always has been. Knots and bumps on my head? Yep, plenty! I find if I'm wearing a hat I hit my head more but keeps the grease off my hair. It's a toss up!

You could wear a bump cap… they have their pros and cons.

Pros: it doesn’t hurt when you bump your head, and your head stays clean

Cons: you bump your head 1000x more, and it is still not any less infuriating with the bump cap on.

We used to use all foam ones at work. Now a thin plastic shell style.
Much more comfortable, but when it’s warm, you will get “sweat head”.
But to be honest, I really just think ahead and duck down:)

A little over a week ago I posted that I was got rid of my four post lift and posted a picture of the open space. Now here's a new and improved photo of the space. I'm liking it!

The T Roadster is scheduled to be sold in a about 2 weeks so when it's gone my Model A coupe will be in its place. I still have some organizing to do once I get some more shelving in place that I already have.

By the way....this is the "storage/garage" side. The driver that used to live under the lift is now in the heated/cooled "shop" side. The dragster has been occupying my workspace for 2 years now. Now when I have something big to work on I can just back the driver out and have some room. There will still be room in the shop side for a longer-term project.

I had a customer give me a 4 post lift, I gave it to one of my buddy's. I have a 2 post at home and no real use for a 4 post.

I have been going back and forth for years on getting one. When I have to do maintenance or exhaust work I’m all in on one. Then I go to my buddies and he’s got a four post . This is where he had 2 cars side by side before he got the lift. I’m like I don’t want a lift anymore. It really comes down to how much room do you have and like Mike suggested keep it out side.
I do love the way Lynns garage looks side by side

I know what you mean. I put my fully restored, matching numbers, mid year Corvette coupe up on my lift when I closed my shop last fall. No particular reason; just "luck of the draw". It's the only car I own that didn't get driven this summer. (I even ran a tank of gas through my late girlfriends Fiero.)

The only good thing about getting older is that I've lost a good two inches in height over the last couple of years and am no longer tall enough to whack my head on it.
