I saw this thread and it reminded me of something I needed to ask you guys... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57817 I need some heavy walled 3/4" inside diameter tubing to make my rear spring perches. Where are you guys getting yours? I've called our two local machine shops and stopped past our s**** yard....they think I'm crazy! Here is a pic I found of something like I'm looking for....(it's too large, I'll see if I can find an example) I only need a coupld of feet...really about 6-12" for this roadster project, this is to put the spring on top of the axle... I cut off my original ones but they are a bit egg shaped...
Pete and Jakes/Super Bell sells fabed up rear spring mounts. They might be willing to sell you just the tubing lengths. Lynn Winter, a HAMB member, is another possible source. You can email him from his profile. Look for Winfab in the member's directory.
The way to get .750 I.D. thick wall is to use seamless 1 1/4 inch .250 wall tubing. 1.250-(2 X .250)=.750 I think the ready made ones i.e. Speedway use 1" 11 gauge which is .125 wall. 1-(2 X .125)=.750 Finding a source is not easy. I am still looking for some 3" X .250 wall locally.
the tubes on the Pete & Jakes rear axle hanger barckets are 1" od....just take a piece of 1" DOM tubing and bore it out , or make it from solid stock...how wide is your rear spring, 2-1/4"? i don't know why a machine shop would think you are crazy , it would be about a 15 minute job
Hey, guys, thanks for the info...... Tell me then, if the P$J are 1" how do they use standard shackles or do they have a special one? I'd like to buy a full 4'-8' pc so I can just have it laying around.... I may have to clean up the srap pcs left from my front and rears and make do. Surely someone knows....I'll try the HAMB lead..... Our local machine shops aren't really "machine shops." I think they just like to drill holes in things and work for large companys.....there must not be much profit in little jobs like a hotrodder would need. There's a place about an hour from here that may have some. I haven't been up that way in a while.......
