I'm trying to dial in the timing on my 427 in my ElCamino. No Money, so I'm pulling out of the old parts bin. I have an old Mallory dual point, part number 25408201D. It seems to work fine, but the points seem excessively noisy. (the rubbing block opening and closing.) They are lubricated and set up properly. Is this normal, and I'm just spoiled by electronic ignition, or is there something wrong? This is a 5 dollar garage sale find from years ago.

Are you just spinning the distributor by hand, or what?

  3. It makes noise if you spin it the wrong way............otherwise the one I have is pretty quiet.

Noise is tough to describe. A Mallory is pretty smooth as a rule.
Plenty of grease on cam , some on rubbing block and oil the hinge pivots on the contact arms etc. Make sure you are turning ( like someone mentioned the correct rotation).
The issue with a garage sale mallory is that its more than likely been sitting for a long time and may be pretty rusty inside below the plate.......

It is noisy running. you can hear the points clacking while the car is running, over the solid lifters and exhaust. it doesn't seem to be coming from inside, I took it apart and freed it up and oiled the weights. never Had a distributor sound like this. The points have lube behind them, and have the felt rubbing blocks in place, it was a brand new set of Mallory points I installed.

I guess time will tell if its a problem. Does it run good ???
Pertronixs make a conversion for this unit and we use quite a few of them . Depends if its a eight or four lobe cam as to the pertronix part number.....

It seems to run fine. If this doesn't send up any red flags for you guys that run them, i'll relube it when I set the advance, and go with it.
