Would there be a noticeable performance gain on a SBC engine if the stock Delco vacuum distributor was replaced with a Mallory dual point unit? Thanks
I had one long ago, no noticeable performance gain, the contacts on the points allways liked to crack, converted it over to electronic then it was noticeable, and it wasn't a maintainace ***** like it was with the points.
An MSDbox with the right coil best investment then use points dist to trigger no points wear then<<<<<<<
Thanks for the answer, I didn't think it was worth the $200, maybe if it was replacing an inferior distributor it would be. Delco stuff is usually pretty good to begin with.
The dual points distributor will give you a longer dwell time, and should give you a good spark at a higher engine RMP than a single points distributor. There won't be any improvement at engine speed under about 4,000 RPM.
I had one years ago and didn't notice anything better than a stock Delco and found it ran just as good with just one set of points.
Or if you'd like just get a petronixs converter, it's cheap, install easy & works great.I just converted mine & its the best thing i ever did,Thats after going thru, singles points, accel & mallory dual points and crane cam trigger light!! JimV
Yep, but the PerTronix Ignitor II with the adaptive dwell in the Delco and then have a good shop re-curve the dist for performance and you'll be happy as a clam
Depending on what advance curve the stock distributor's got, a Mallory may give you a performance increase due to the more performance oriented curve. However, the s**** that p***es for a new Mallory dual point in recent years isn't worth using. I'd run a 40-50 year old Mallory without concern, though.
