Just picked up a Magspark for my 394. I realize that this thing is ancient. My question(s) Are there any caps and rotors available new? And plug wires available too?

  2. You are likely going to have to find caps and rotors at a Swapmeet buy they are out there. Plug are kits are available new.

I'd check eBay. There are parts that show up there every once in a while (and are kind of expensive; I've seen NOS caps go for over $200). Also, most Mallory distributors used points that were designed for OEM use. I'd start looking at point sets for contemporary GM distributors; chances are that there are some that will fit. I am starting to compile a cross-reference list, but I'm mainly into Ford stuff. Also, I believe I've seen a thread on here that said NAPA sells some caps and rotors that fit the Mallory distributors. IIRC, they are made in Germany and are also quite expensive, though not as much as the original Mallory stuff. The caps, though they fit, look like standard "nipple" caps, and not like "flattops". The search engine on this site is pretty good, so you should be able to find the thread.

As for plug wires, I'd go with good ole' Packard 440 and Rajah ends. They are avail able from "The Brillman Company" among others.

The cap is a NAPA Echlin MA5 and the rotor is the MA7. If you do find a Mallory flat top cap the MA7 will work with it.
BTW, do you have the MagSpark coil?

I believe that Mallory "flattops" used two different rotors; one with the spring-loaded carbon "button" in the cap and another with it in the rotor. Just another thing to check.

That’s correct, I should have mentioned that the early 24004 brown cap uses the 24215 spring loaded contact and the later black 4004 caps can use the 4215 Mallory rotor or the MA7.

Thank for the input guys. From what I've seen, NAPA is out of the caps, but you can still get the rotors. I have a transformer. It has the resistor(?) Pieces on the top where the wires from both sets of points go. It's marked in the circle as 6v and the one clip is marked positive ground. Anyone got any idea on if I can get this thing to work 12 negative ground setup? Also I got a set of Accel copper core 7mm wires for it. And I know they may not be period correct, but I like the look.

Bumping this back up because I have a 6 volt Magspark coil too. Is there someone who can rebuild it to a 12 volt?
