Technical Mallory YL cap swap?

I have searched and searched. But I can't find a straight up cap for the smaller Mallory YL distributor. These are the earlier small diameter that use a flatty crab style cap. I have the 455HP ford unit and a YL GA2 tach drive and the crab cap fits beautifully. The modern Mallory 209m cap is too big. My problem is the crab cap hits the firewall. I need a straight up cap. Is there a straight cap that fits the early ford distributor?

This may not solve the problem with the "crab" caps, but there is a discussion going on on "The Ford Barn" right now about this. The consensus is that NAPA has a cap that will replace the "flattop" two-piece caps. It is the Echlin MA9. It is expensive ($65) but it seems to fit. Several of us over there have ordered them (and the matching rotor - MA7) . I suggest that you check over there in a few days and see how this turns out.

@tubman please let me know how it turns out. I'm not on fordbarn. But if that cap fits it should fit the early YL as well.

**** YL and YC are different. Just checked my NOS sbf YC cap and it's internal ring instead of external.

I'll try to remember; if you don't hear from me in a few days, give me a poke.

I have both a cap and rotor on order. No shipping notice from NAOPA yet.

A 42 ford crab cap cap and rotor fit the YL Mallory distributor perfectly!

Now I need a cap with normal straight up leads that fits the same diameter. A later flathead rotor fits but the cap is still to large by about 1/8".

I got my MA7 rotor and MA9 cap today. They look good (br*** contacts in the cap; made in Germany). I tried them on a couple of distributors and they fit all of the "YC" series distributors I have, but do not fit the "YL" models. One of the "YL" distributors I have has a new conventional cap on it that I believe I bought from Jeg's. I'll try to find out more detail.

EDIT : I checked and it seems Jeg's has them. They list non-vented and Marine, AND.... you have your choice of red or blue.:D I remember I painted mine black with some special paint for plastics and it turned out well. I think it was Krylon.

Thanks @tubman i tried those already. They are a very loose fit on the old YL. They fit the new YL. I found a marine can that is close, i will sleeve the old of the distributor slightly. A flathead crab rotor fits perfectly.

  11. I didn’t realize there was an old YL and a new YL .
Are you certain you have a YL,,,,,or maybe someone put the wrong tag on .
Pics would help,,,,,and maybe a mic measurement of the OD where the cap sits ?
I have a few YL s,,,,,and they all take the regular cap and rotor .

I have two of them. A 445 HP for a ford and a YL GA2 tack drive for a Chevy.
The later one it for a dodge, still a YL
