Searching the HAMB trying to get a few pointers on how to start the task of setting up my 4x2 Offy intake for the street and found this thread. You are right, these thing run WOT like a ****D APE!!! Sent my 4 Rochester 2G's to Charlie Price last summer for rebuild and out of the box and they were outrageous !Just got done fixing the damage from the 2008 HAMB Drags yesterday and took her out for a ride around the HOOD yesterday,,,, NOT TO GOOD. I know it can be done because this is the set-up that had been on this (little go cart" FIDDY") since the 60's until dad sold them in the early 90's. Just have to go through the pain to get to the prize!!!
From my experience with a Man-a-fre in the mid 60's, the trick to getting them to run well on the street was jetting down. Idle setting was a big pain in the ***, but once it was set, it seemed to stay there...
Hi, Noticed this post and coincidently saw this tonight also: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/esd/pts/1011750694.html It's from the San Diego area. Seems like there is more stuff available for sale lately. Must be the economy and unemployment. Rick
My buddy had a setup which I borrowed and ran on my coupe for several years without any problems. I rebuilt the four Pontiac Rochester 2GC's and it ran well on the street. I remember thinking how large these 2 barrels where compared to the Chevys. I can't remember if I used a Unisync or not but I recall it was a pretty straight forward setup. If I remember correctly, there was a balance tube that connected all the carbs so the four carbs acted like one. The direct port injection unit that injected fuel into the manifold under the carbs via a solenoid was called "Afterburner" - like nitrous today, only this was pre-nitrous days. I believe the guy who designed this setup was Harold Graves out of Northridge, CA as I visited his shop in the 70's. He later died of a brain hemmorage or something like that. Whoever took over the shop then turned it into a 4X4 shop specializing inToyotas Landcruisers and moved it to Agoura, CA. It was a great design and Mr. Graves was way ahead of his time - Godspeed.
I thought the same thing about finding an Offy like my dad had and then affording it. Found this one on E-gay with the four rebuildable 2G's for $275. I spent some coin to have them rebuilt but probably could have done it myself with a little pacientce. DMARV still sells the OFFY one here on the HAMB but the real money is in the carbs.
