For the life of me I just cannot fathom Tommy Chong as himself. ALL I can picture is him as his stoner character. I can't believe he drives a Prius.

This line really cracked me up.

he says, “by driving the ultimate electric stoner car, I can get off the ***ty. You know, the oil ***ty.”

I agree Frank. I can just see it: "That skunk smell officer? That's what the batteries smell like when I air up the bags, man…"

BTW, I recognize the tag line, but old age has robbed me of remembering who said it. Cole ****ce? Raul Duke?

I can see him fitting into the hippie stoner tree hugger lifestyle.

Does anybody online here remember a 29 roadster that used to attend the NSRA Western Nats in the late 80's & Early 90's that was Gray Primer & had steelies and the license plate read 48 Volts.

I've talked about this car before on here, but I'll say again, This car truly a kick *** unit! It didn't have a trunkload of batteries, just 2 RV style 24 volt units and had a hell of a range,

They'd charge it right there @ the fair grounds then I'd see them on the street. It was pretty fast too! Now if anybody could just figure out a way to place series of alternators on an idler pulley system, then they they might be able put a little of juice back in the system while driving or switching over to a v-drive type set up while they are sitting @ a light.
    Just a thought???

What? No dual pipes cackling? I don't believe it! What happened to all the fun? Does it have dual coils? ....whatever.

  9. Tommy Chong lives a few blocks away, I see him at Pavilions on Montana Ave. in Santa Monica (the Peoples Republic) frequently and guess what...he's not acting, he looks and talks just like in the movies...stoned out of his mind. The stoner "character" is the man himself. It's pretty cool to see him wandering about in the produce isle nonetheless. His daughter used to frequent the same store...she was good looking but that's another topic...

Don't eat the brown acid man...Damn hippies

A couple years ago they made an electric car out of a FG '32 coupe.
I remember the build up but never saw the car around.
It seams like a cool idea since we'll be forced out of the stone age soon.

The electric '46 Olds is pretty neat stuff. However, anyone who thinks at this point in time that they are getting off of the "oil ***ty" by driving an electric car is just kidding themeself. Most of the electricity in this country is still generated by burning fossil fuel at a power plant, all that's being accomplished is moving the emissions (pollution) from the tail pipe to a smokestack somewhere else. Where's the benifit in that?

Also, at this point in time, electric cars are impractical and inefficient. Most of the energy they use goes toward moving the weight of the batteries, so they can only carry very small payloads (pasengers, luggage, cargo, etc.). Look at GM's EV1 for example. It's quite small and can only carry two people and a breifcase, yet it weighs as much as my '63 Impala. It also has maximum range of only 75 miles. Not very practical.

The hybrids available now make more sense, there is a benifit to driving them. However, they still have the payload issue at this point.

Until most of our electricity is produced from a clean, renewable source, electric cars will pretty much just be a novelty.

I'll get off my soap box now.

You also have the generation of electric power via nuclear reaction... and you're absolutely right about the transfer of burning one fossil fuel to another and the pollution (if that's what you're trying to cut down on) from one state, to another.

Actually, what's the big deal, it's just another low flying bomb with a trunk full of batteries :)

in 1973 a guy used a lawnmower engine to run an automobile alternator to charge the battery in his Opel GT (looks like a small corvette). The Opel had a jet engine starter motor instead of an engine. He was getting about 90 MPG

I wholeheartedly agree, anyone telling themselves they are free from oil are lying to themselves.

BTW you can't run alternators off an electrically driven engine and generate more electricity, that would be energy from nothing and impossible. That would be like saying you found a way to process your poop into food so you don't have to buy food at the grocery store.

I actually caught an episode on MTV where some shop in LA was doing the install of the air ride and paint done on Chongs' olds... my first impression was it was nice to see one of the icons doing a low-rider in a "traditionsal style"

the benefit is that the coal that produces most of our electricity isn't sourced from hostile countries. not to mention the nuclear, wind, hydro, and solar power. i don't know about you, but my electricity hasn't doubled in price in the last two years like gasoline has. at least Tommys doing something, it may not be totally practical today, but if nobody embraces the technology, it will NEVER be practical.

So he gets off the oil *** and ****s on the coal ***, cuz that is where the power company is getting the power from.

I don't get the thinking behind having more and bigger batteries(which have to go somewhere when they die) vs. producing hydrocarbons by burning gas...

but hey... I think too much.
