I have been thinking about sticking a manual transmission on my 301 Chrysler and I would like to know from the experts here on the HAMB what is a good transmission to mate it to and where do I find an adapter plate to do so? This is going in my lakes modified Willys project and I just think a car like that needs a manual rather than the auto I have on the motor now. I plan on getting 225 horses out of the engine with a few mods. What would you guys use?
I'll bet money that any trans that can be adapted to the back of a '50s Hemi can be adapted to your Spitfire. I haven't got any hard evidence for it, however. How badly do you plan to abuse this baby? I'd be seriously tempted to go Saginaw 4-speed, myself. They're cheap, plentiful and Chevy adaptors are the most readily available.
Looks like the Wilcap 54-58 Hemi adaptor works for your application. APPLICATION: V8 CHRYSLER 54-58, DODGE 53-58, DESOTO 52-58, PLYMOUTH 55-58 TRANSMISSION: CHEVY/BOP MANUAL TRANS. Hi, well i'm plannin a chev 4 spd but they also have adapters for mopar 4 spds. Thanks again for the T back.
My son was planning on doing the same thing for the 301 he is putting in his 40 willy's pickup. was going the 5 speed route, but now has changed his mind to a AOD GM unit. there are adaptors for the tremec 5 speed out there also.
Your welcome. Where were you going to get your adapter plate? I would like to be able to find a used one. Have you had any luck finding used stuff like that?
The only stuff he found out there was new, except for a chev. bellhousing for the 5 speed. i think it bolts to a flat plate on the back of the block..i can check with him this weekend, as he will be here, wiring our remodeling project.
