I have to take the valve body out of my ****** to get it rebuilt. Right now it is a manual shift, in a powerglide. I can get a standard one for a real good price, and was wondering if I could just switch back to a standard one, or are there other modifications done to convert to manual shift. also how much of a pain is it to run a manual shift on the street? I will probobly never drag race on a track...
Dunno about your first question, but on the second, it won't be any more h***le on the street than a standard manual. you just have to remember to shift. Depending on how it's set up, it'll probably shift quite harsh though.
Thanks. The ****** was rebuilt awhile ago, and the valve body(manual valve body) was not fully ***embled. I can get that fixed but was wondering it it would be a pain to have to shift all the time, esp when downshifting, Also I wasn't sure if it was just a case of switching the valve bodies and un capping the vac mdoulator, to go back to stock.
Was the governor on the output shaft removed when the trans converted to full manual shift? Do you have the throttle valve linkage for the PG? You need it to convert backt o automatic shifts. A PG shift points are controlled by the throttle valve linkage from the trans to the carb. The PG shift points are not controlled by the vacuum modualtor
Never had a manual PG. Had a manual valve body done up for a 727 by local Torqueflite guru Pat Blais; shifts great. His valve body doesn't have the nasty 'overlap-then-bang' 2-3 shift of the usual MoPar manual conversions out there. The kickdown lever was axed during conversion, so there's no pressure modulation to soften shifts for part throttle. That being said, it works very well on the street. At least, I was very happy with it. If it were me, I'd try running as-is; see how you like it. Powerglide isn't too heavy or hard to take out if you want to work on it; you can likely take valve body out while trans still in car. -bill
