Got a water pump question and help on identification.

I have two water pumps that my dad has collected over the years. One is an original part of the roadster as it was built in the 40's. Problem is I haven't been able to locate any information on it so I thought I'd start with the wealth of knowledge from the HAMB Bangers.

I was able to get the motor running this week and after filling the radiator and running the motor for a short spell, the water pump started leaking.

The water pump is sprung loaded. Meaning as you push on the fan and pulley, the shaft pushes into the head housing. The other noticeable difference is the plate that covers the armature shaft. There is only one grease fitting that fill this entire cavity with grease. The water was leaking from the normal place, at the brass bushing.

Can anyone help me identify this water pump and quite possibly how to repair the leak? The identifying marks on the water pump are CRP Co. 002 on the underside. The ball bearing on the inside says Nice Ball Bearing Co. Philadelphia, PA.

The other is a simple Model A water pump but it is has an aluminum cast body with all the regular parts. Markings on the are Made in USA M4 on one side and on the other the number 11. Is this an after-market product? If so, what is the possible manufacture date?

Thanks for any help you can pass my way.

Well, not much to report here. Not much time lately to get much done.
Shifting between two projects to keep myself busy when I get the time to get busy!

Have been working on wood bucks to make the sheet metal for the 1920s bobtail racer.

  3. Yes he drives it but only on the local dirt roads, actually most of the roads around here are dirt. He gets off of the school bus about 3/4 mile from the house so one day the wife picked him up at the bus stop and let him drive home. Quite the celebrity the next day at school. Now he finally has his license so he will be driving to school for a short time. I say a short time because I know him and the natural course of things being what they are he will get a ticket and lose the privilege for a time. He plans on driving the RPU to school one day but I'm not sure if I like that idea. I have a 51 Triumph Thunderbird and his father wanted to drive it to school for a "Car Day" in 1976. I let him and he came home with a speeding ticket and the bike wouldn't go into 2 nd. gear. So been there done that and no "T" shirt!!

Gaters- your water pump in an after market item. Don't know anyone who runs one. You can buy rebuilt or new "stock" ones that are "leakless". Contact your local Model A parts supplier. Talk to some one in your local A club- there is often someone who rebuilds them.

You can also buy all the leakless parts yourself for a fraction of what buying a leakless pump that someone else built for you.

    Easy to do it yourself.

    modelAsteve,

Because of the uniqueness of the gray pump and the fact that it is an original part of my roadster, I eventually want to put it back on. I will take your advice and seek out a local Model A club. That would be a good resource too.

    Thanks

    Elrod,
No kidding. I was in a parts shop yesterday and a new pump was $80+. I've already looked at replacement parts and it would not come out nearly as expensive. Not only that but I'd learn how to do it myself and how it functions. Bonus!

Gaters, I'm sure you can get packing for the after market pump you have. If not, I've heard guys used to cut stands off of a mop and pack in there.

Do you know who carries the leakless parts? My brother bought the whole pump. Seems to be the way to go.

    Hey Gaters,
The Model A Ford Club of Orange County is having their annual Pancake break fast at Hart Park in the city of Orange on Sunday March 29th. Show up there and you will find many Model A reasorces. The parking lot will look like a Ford dealer from the 30's.

I can not begin to express how much this picture rules.

Dont forget to angle the steering wheel a bit more! My personal preference was to have the center of the steering wheel to be bit below the center line of my chest. Think about what muscle groups you are using, a sprint car is not driven with your finger tips.

  12. Good question for the Fordbarn forum! I'm sure the experts there would know.

Coaltown- the build looks fantastic! I'm jealous about two things:

    1) the time you've been able to spend/amount you've accomplished

    and

    2) YOU ACTUALLY FIT IN THAT THING!!!- what are you, 5'10"??? (I've been trying to find a way to squeeze all 6'6" of me into the speedster buck AND frind room for a passenger:D:rolleyes:!

Hey, this'll be cool. You going? Wouldn't mind meeting up to say hello if you do. I'm going to make plans to go out and check out all the Model A's. Thanks for the info. I can bring pictures of the pumps and see what I can find out.

Good idea. I've visited the site but never have chimed in on the board there. This'll be a good reason to do so.

6'6", I have bad enough time at 6'1", there are no passangers only hangers-on. If you make it to comfy for 'em they get relaxed and forget to hang on!

HA! The mop string would go right along with my roadster too. The original packing doesn't look much different. I do see they make a modern teflon rope of sorts as a better way to seal up the brass bushing.

As far as I can tell the aluminum pump is a duplicate of the original but, aluminum. What I am not sure of is it 40's, 50's, 60's....? I'm thinking about stripping the paint and polishing it.

Never having rebuilt one of these, the shaft is hard to turn by hand. Is this normal after new packing? I read where your supposed to hand tighten the center nut and then wrench it snug but not tight. I did this and it does turn but it's pretty tight. Will this wear in after use?

Ya, I'll be there. Look me up. I'm the balding, graying, fat guy with the Banger powered RPU. I should be easy to pick out of the crowd. :D:D
The Tan HAMB hat might be a better way to find me.

  20. Gaters, I would immagine that the new packing will be a little snug, and should loosen up when it runs a little while.

I am getting closer to a shake down run in the roadster. Gotta finish getting the body done, and a little wiring and off we'll go.

    Bluto,
What size is that engine? 500 cc?
Looks like a blast. Maybe a hair dryer for forced induction?

Maybe tighten the nut till you can still turn the shaft by hand. run it, then snug it up to speck. that would look really good polished. also check the link above for the leakless kit.
