Slightly relevant: You pull an older roll out and it's hard to unwind, tears, etc. Go stick it in the microwave for a few seconds.
Most of the masking tapes from the body shop supply places are good but the stuff from the building supply places are terrible. I ran out of tape while painting the kitchen and had to get some from the hardware store. How do house painters work with that stuff?
Use 3M yellow its made for baking in the booth so its good stuff. Be careful with the cheaper tapes harder to remove and can have seeping.
I used to use Smart SHoppers, Haven't bought from them in a while, I think they changed names to Dad's Customs or something.
Check "ZORO" for tape prices. I've been paying less than $4 for 1/4 inch. I use it for striping layout. Have to buy a bit for the price, but I buddy up with a friend to make it work.
There was/is a masking tape shortage. We had a hard time getting all kind of tape at work. Masking, double back, etc. But we use thousands of rolls a year. Aerospace products production. Think helo blades, engine cowls, and light weight structure parts.
I've tried both the blue and the green and with either people can still get loose, and make it out of the woods to the highway before I can get the hole dug.
I have been using 3m yellow on the last 2 builds. It won't set as long as green but if you remove it in a couple of days, it works good. All tape since the old 3m days seems to have a shelf life. I'm amazed at what tape costs now.
I hear ya. When I see the TV goons stripping a whole fender with a 2" roloc disc on an angle grinder I CRINGE. Labor time, consumable and air cost - I'd F'n fire 'em - get a DA and get to work. Maybe that's why all those builds need a full body skim coat of filler ???
I also buy a sleeve and keep the unused rolls in my shop refrigerator. It seems to keep the tape fresh for when I need it.
On your recommendation Sir, I ordered a sleeve of this tape, as I am to a point in my life where I do not have a problem spending some money to see what is good & what is not! So far your opinion of it is spot on! It is probably half as thick as 3M green, but seems to have good adhesion! Knowing that it is an off brand product, being a gorilla would not be helpful! I will put a roll on my masking machine & also use a roll for general taping over the next week or so. Always good to have choices that are usable if there is a large savings of coin! However, As always just like in my transporting industry you DO get what you pay for! God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ar-transport-hauling-open-or-enclosed.614419/
