Paul if you "buy" the vehicle from a mass licensed auto dealer you would only pay sales tax on the price you paid for the vehicle. So if you have a friendly dealer that would resell the truck to you then you could save some money. That's how I'm doing my roadster.
By the way that truck looks cool, I could fit a lot of spare parts for my car in the back of it when we go back to Bonneville in 2010... just saying.

john, I've had tons of advise on what I should have done. However, they've already put the VIN into the computer at RMV, so I'm afraid of the problems that could come up if I came at them from a different direction. I know I'll come at it diferently next time.

Bonneville 2010?? sounds good, except that it'll be 2012 before I'll have it done. Maybe, who knows. It's gonna need a 5 speed or a run like that.

I had a similar experience only it was with a 1934 Ford Roadster. I had to pay 5%sales tax of $26,500 as that was the low NADA book on this car. RMV didn't care what kind of condition it was in and wouldn't let me take the value of the 3 window coupe that I swapped for this car because "it wasn't done thru a certified Mass. Car dealer."

I filed an appeal with the tax office and it was promptly rejected. I could have pursued it farther with a $60 application fee. I gave up.

I have bought my last three hotrods from New York State and the Mass. RMV accepts a NY starte title with no hassles. They just want the tax $$$$.

As much of a pain it is to get a title, sometimes it a bad idea to look a "gift horse" (aka miserable bitch at the RMV counter) in the mouth. If they got your vin in the system, i'd just stay the course.

I know people who have used them, works mint but doesn't address the great tax swindle.

It appears that they charge you an outrageous tax then set up a bogus abatement appeal process which you are automatically rejected from and then if you keep complaining they try to use your tenacity to swindle another 60 bucks out of you. Talk about adding insult to larceny.

I used Broadway Title for my 30 coupe. That was about 2 years ago.Cost was 150.00 and took 2 months to get a dealer bill of sale selling my car to me.I took it to the Mass RMV and they accepted it without a problem.I had to pay tax on $9500.00 though.(even though it was only a shell of a carbody dragged outa the woods.) After paying,I was told I could apply for an abatement but not to get my hopes up as they are rarely approved.
Broadway Title works well. (IMO)- Good luck

This is a good point. On a car you build those pricks have you paying sales tax twice! Bastards!

Not to change the topic, but speaking of TAX-achusetts, this year plan on recieving a 10-99 form from the state. They will be asking you to pay taxes of course, no surprise, but its not going to be for the toilet you fixed for the lady next door who payed you by check, but for your new found wealth come February: Federal Tax Return. Oh yes my friends, this too will be considered "Earned Income" and MUST be subject to MA income tax. CHAAAAA-CHINGGGGGG!

  12. I am going to restate what I was trying to say in my earlier post. The trick is to get the vehicle titled or registered in your name in another state. Pay the sales tax in that state. Then when you apply for a Mass title, you can show them that you own the car and that the tax has been paid.
