Got a V8 maverick rear end in my model A project. Did maverick or comet ever have a factory posi removable center section? How about 70s mustangs, do they use the same 8" pumpkin?
As far as I know there were a few 8" posi units produced but they are hard to come by these days. There are also some aftermarket ones you can pick up.
i bought a new 1975 Ford Maverick Grabber and it definitely had an 8 inch Posi...or whatever Ford called it then . as said, not many were made yes, 70s Mustang 8 inch pumkin should fit the Maverick housing
Any 8" center will fit any 8" housing. I have a 4.10 spool loaded in one that I swap around between a few of my cars if I want to play around at the track. I've also found posi units to be more common in Mavericks and Mustang II's than early Mustangs.
Funny thing is, when you find an 8" posi, they're always 2.87, 2.80 or 3.00 gears. Never find a posi 3.25, 3.40, 3.55 etc.
Look at the size of the tire on a Maverick, early Mustang or Mustang II. A "short" tire doesn't need much gear. .
USPS trucks I have used axle out of was always a Dana 44 , never seen 8 Ford under one of these . I have had 8 inch LDS came from Mustang 2 Cobra , 3.42 ratio best I can remember
Ford called it Trac Loc, that will make it easier for you to find. "Positraction" or Posi is a GM name.
I have two 8'' Maverick rears, one in my 33 sedan and one in my 66 Nova. I bought a trac loc posi from Summit . Be careful swapping drop outs as there is an early and late. I believe the earlys filled on the back of the housing and the lates filled at the drop out. Just make sure you have a place to fill the gear oil. I found this out after I installed the 8'' in my 33. No fill holes!!! I ended up filling thru the vent tube which took a looooong time.
Funny 33 cdan, I did the opposite and now I have two fill holes, but strangely enough, no drain holes. Would it have killed them to install a drain plug on these things?
I did that once, ended up with no filler, I took one axle out, ipped the car up slightly and filled it through the axle tube.
When that happened to me on Ford 9" (same issue) I spotted where the fill hole on the housing should have been, drilled a 1/2 inch hole, and used a self-tapping, over sized oil pan drain plug. No problem after that.
Mavericks never came from the factory with a Trac Loc and only had either 2.79 or 3.00 gears. If it has anything else it was put in later. Fairlanes, Mustangs and Mustang II's could have Trac Loc from factory, as well as any gear from 2.79 up to 4.11. Depending on engine and option list.
I thought 3.55 was the lowest gear (highest numerically) Ford put factory original in the 8-inch rears? I know aftermarket you can get lower, but never heard of more than 3.55, which even those are hard to find. Most all seem to be the 2.79 or 3.00 gears. I have heard some of the older 60's had a 3.25 or 3.40 gear. Just curious if Ford actually made lower than 3.55 gears? Every Maverick rear I have ever pulled has been 2.79 or 3.00.
I may be wrong, but I'm thinking some of the Mustangs had a 4.11, but those may have only been available in the 9" rears. 3.55 was used a lot in the Mustang II and Pinto's with the 8", some of the II's even came with a Trac Loc. I have a II that was under my Lincoln when I bought it, too narrow and 4 lug, but it has a 3.55 gear in it, open though, wasn't lucky enough for it to be a Trac Loc. I may end up putting it in the Fairlane 8" under the car now when I get the 302/AOD installed, I currently have a 3.00 gear in it out of a Maverick rear. The Fairlane had a 2.79, and it was a 390 automatic car.
Ford made 2.785, 3.0, 3.25, 3.55, 3.89 and 4.11 - All factory posi. Some were special order but nun the less they were all available.
When you're talking 9" that's a completely different story. 62 Fairlane and Meteor were the first to have the 8" and 3.00 or 3.25 open diff is the most common. 63 Fairlane had the availability to the Kcode 289, only trans was a close ratio toploader 4spd, only rear was a 9" and the only ratio for that combo was the 3.89, with the 4.11 being optional. That combination carried over the 65 Mustang as well. Late 60s and through the 70s the other ratios mentioned used and the 8" Trac Loc was more common. It's very unusual to find one in a 60s car though.
