I found a 8" Maverick 1970 rearend for my project. I just talked to the fellow that has it and he thinks that it is the wrong one for me. It has a six cyclinder engine so the axles are four lug not five lug. What do I have to do to make it work on my roadster? Can I change the axles to have the right pattern to fit my Ford 16 inch wheels? I know there is someone with the answer. Dennis
You can either look for 5 lug axles and brakes, OR you can re drill the 4 lug to 5 lug if it is the Ford 5 on 4.5, if it is the 5 on 5.5 I doubt they will go that big, nor will any 8" axle
A 70 Mav 6 should have had a 7.5 not an 8. If it has a rear cover, it's a 7.5 and you will not want it.
You may be able to re drill the axles but it your using 16 inch wheels they probably have the big bolt pattern. Your best bet is to look for a early 9" Bronco axle,66-77,it has the correct bolt pattern and will be 5 lug. HRP
Doubt you would be able to re-drill those axles (or 5 stud 8" axles for that matter) to early ford 5 on 5.5", I dont think theres enough meat there. I could look at the ones in the 8" that came out of my falcon, but I dont think the axle flange is large enough in diameter.
Oh trust me, you won't get a 5 on 5 1/2" pattern on a Maverick axle flange! Tried it, and with out an outer ring to support it isn't happening. As far as four lug 8"ers, I'm pretty sure the bearing carriers are different to the four and five lug rears meaning the axles won't interchange.
Some Maverick 6 cyl's in 1970 got an 8" with the following codes WEV-M Maverick '70 2.79 8 in NL 28 - WDV-N Maverick '70 3.00 8 in NL 28
Just hung an 8" under my '34 frame and as it has been mentioned...no way to get a 5 1/2" bolt pattern on that axle flange. I wanted my old steelies bad enough to use adapters (ez accessories inc) It also gives some needed clearance in the wheel wells since the Mav rear is Narrow!!
tHESE ARE a great hotrod rear end.I have 4 of them 2 in and two out in storage . all 5 lug. thats the one you want they fit a ton of other 50s kars and early ford. Somebody is always asking if i'm ready to get off them, spares bob s
As mentioned, early Bronco axles are good. Another option, the '35 has an 8" out of a Ford Granada. 5 lugs, Ford bolt pattern, easy to find brake parts.
I have a 76 Maverick 8" / 5 on 4.5 lugs in my 35 chevy. Bolted in with out changing the spring plates. All i had to do was build some shock absorber mounts.
If you are using 16 " Wheels off a Old Ford, they are not 4 3/4 " bolt Patern. You can use Ford Pk. Up. Axle for them. I don't know what you are building, as you might have to narrow 9" Truck down.
next to the little broncos the 58-60 tbird has the shortest width axle (all 9 inches 5 on 41/2 bc) ford made or so im told (i find it hard to believe) of course youd only want one from a 59 or a 60 for the leaf springs 58s had coilsprings
How about the next best bet for using the old 16" wheels w/ a 5.5"x5 B.P.; get a 9" pick-up truck rear end and have it shortened for the correct width? Or is that too much to be able to re-spline? Kinky6
Granada is going to give the same problem when you try to drill a 5 on 5 1/2" pattern. there just isn't enough meat on the wheel flange to pull it off. G.M. used a 5 on 4 3/4" pattern, not Ford. Ford late is 5 on 4 1/2", Ford early is 5 on 5 1/2".
That is what I am doing on mine. I picked up a pickup rear axle a while back and Dutchmans in Portland charges 90.00 to shorten a pair of regular axles and 120.00 to narrow the housing. You have to have the axles that can be shortened though.
I'm not 100% certain, and happy to be proven wrong, but I'm reasonably certain the 8" axles are all interchangeable. The 9" has at least two different bearing sizes and the large bearing comes in two different designs...those are old memories though, and subject to CRS. It depends. Talk to Moser or someone similar first. If it's a 31-spline axle, it can be resplined quite narrow. If it's a 28-spline axle, it depends on which axle blank they started with. If they start with a 31-spline blank (mostly later big cars with disc brakes, but also later trucks), you can only respline to 28 for a short while and then the axle necks down before going back up to a 31 spline diameter...talk to Moser or someone else who's done a lot of these. Or buy new axle blanks...
There's also a Ford 7 3/4" rear end - which is basically an 8" in a different case with a slightly smaller ring gear. Has 4 studs. Internal parts are interchangable. I have one on my Modified, it was sold to me as an 8" and shipped here from So Cal. I only found out it was a 7 3/4 when I bought a finned Offy diff cover that wouldn't fit. By that time the damn thing was fitted and I was committed (not many 8" rears in UK scrapyards). I made an adapter so I could use it...
Axles with 5 on 5 1/2 pattern most Ford 1/2 ton up to 96, 94 up 1/2 ton Dodge Ram 66 up Bronco, and if you want really short 46-85 CJ Jeep.
