Its not that it doesn't matter anymore- To some it never did matter nor will it ever matter no matter what. I agree though - run overlapped joints and just pave it flush. Then after seeing what happens decide where you will stand - with those that know better or with those that don't care. If somebody is ok with 1,2,3 " of mud to fix a body then 4,5,6" is probably ok too. Once the line of poor craftsmanship is crossed does it really matter how far into it you go?
Talk about missing the point. You are 100 percent right, it is lousy craftsmanship but that was not the question. The question was, will bondo last if it is more than 1/8" thick? I always laugh at this question. Nobody who ever worked in a body shop would ask it. We have all seen bondo 2 or 3" thick that lasted for donkey's years. Guess I better join the AMATEURS and NEWBIES who never built a car in their life, and "know" better than guys who have been working on cars for 50 years .
I didn't miss any point at all. this is a discussion board where we discuss things. it would be a pretty boring place if the one and only answer to this question "sometimes it will and sometimes it won't" was given and no one else chimed in. "working on cars for 50 years" means absolutely nothing. plenty of hacks out there who will never get better or even try to do a good job.
Yep plenty of 50 years doing it but only 1 year experience repeated 50 times. Bottom line to answer the queation - prep is more important than anything. I have seen body filler crack 1/8" thick and I have had to just grind out full quarters made of chicken wire, newspaper and body filler. You put good spot welds along with panel bond epoxy, then body filler to smooth out, you will be fine. If it cracks just repeat the last step. But that will last as long as the paint will.
