Technical Max rpm before stock sbc blows up real good?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Greasyman, Dec 6, 2020.

  1. When I was bracket racing, I had a 350 with a stock bottom end, cast crank, stock rods, stock rod bolts, and cheap 12 to 1 “claimer” cast pistons. It had a great top end, World Products Sportsman Heads, Crane Roller rockers, and the largest Crane “Saturday Night Special” hydraulic cam and springs. Topped off with a Vic Jr and Holley 750 Double Pumper. When we ran quarter mile, I used 4.11 gears and a 4500 GER converter(remember those?). Then Gateway International Raceway switched to eighth mile due to construction of the new track. Then I built a 4.88 for the nine inch and raced that. The problem was, when they switched back to quarter mile, I never switched gears. All along I had 28” tires. I really loved the launch with the 4.88’s, but never considered the RPM on the big end at the end of the quarter. I know it was over 7000 rpm, and I did it time and time again. How that lower end held together, I’ll never understand. In later reflection, these events are what caused me to be a die hard Small Block Chevrolet guy. That engine had every right to toss its cookies all over, but never did. Ah, to be young and dumb again.

  2. I ran a stock car claimer class and we used engines straight out of the junkyard or from donor wrecked cars, the 307 was usually a good runner. Swap in a claimer cam and lifters, intake, distributor and go racing. I liked to keep the revs down to under 6500 and it saw that for 30 to 50 laps, granted my foot was not in it for long on a 1/4 or 1/5 mile track.

I took a 327 apart that help up amazingly well considering the punishment. The crank, pistons and rods were perfect.

    Kind of a different question.
Too many variables, but if you really want to know the answer.....
Video it for us - put your ear plugs in - Hold your foot to the floor- time it until it does.
