maybe not wanted here . . . ?

  1. Among other vehicles, I have a bread truck, and was directed to the 43-page step van discussion on this site. Read several pages, joined the HAMB, was directed to introduce myself. Read the "Read This First" post by Sean. Is he the originator of the site? He makes it semi-clear that my kind is not wanted; only semi-clear because since I'm not a mind-reader, I'm not fully clear on what HIS kind of member could include. Is he only interested in hearing from owners of Thirties coupes with original suspensions and built flatheads? Some of the posts on the long step van thread indicate a similar attitude, suggesting the step-van guys go away. Okay, I also have a fat-fender resto-rod project, a '41 Lincoln Continental coupe. Pretty car, but the original V-12 engine had all of the weak points of the Ford flathead and then some, and while it could be improved a little, a V-12 Jag will be far better. The original brakes were a joke, too. So, is putting in a modern engine, brakes, and suspension going to put this car so far out of the desired realm of "old school" as to make it unwelcome too?

Well, tell you what. I'm approaching 66 years old (Sean's profile says he is 35), and I can tell you that if the "old school" guys had had Jag V-12s and Mustang II front ends and HEI ignitions and Holley double-pumpers and turbos and nitrous and the other good stuff we have now, they would have been in seventh heaven! The whole "rat rod" thing cracks me up, too; "old school" guys' cars only looked like that because they were the only cars they had, because they were young and poor and had to work and go to school and didn't have time or money to lavish on a toy, . . . and in a lot of cases those owners of "old school" cars were not much more mechanically talented or knowledgeable than a similar group of young car-guys today.

Hey, I can be as nostalgic as anyone. I got to ride on all of the last of the piston-engined airliners, and feel that jetliners constitute a sad come-down from the glory years of the airline industry. I think that the best looking cars were pretty much all built before 1957. I think REAL rock and roll died when stupid kids started buying the Beatles instead of Elvis. So I get that Sean and some others have their preferences. I'm just not clear on how restrictive they want the site to be.

  2. No reason to get your shorts in a bunch. The H.A.M.B. is dedicated to pre 64 traditional rides
so it sounds like you'll fit in just fine. Welcome from Michigan and enjoy the site.

Welcome from Florida- as with any specialty forum, this one has a particular (albeit quite wide) range of vehicles in mind- and you have vehicles that may fit in the range. I personally have vehicles that do, and do not fit in here, as you will find many others on here do to. I am a member on 5 different forums, but I still find myself either on here, or one of the sister sites, Jockey Journal or Garage Journal, more often than the rest. I have personally found that this site and Jockey Journal have made me a better craftsman, and more in tune to the details, quite simply by seeing the great craftsmanship and detail found on these sites. The creativity flows rampant! Look at the news of the Hunnert Car Pile Up- this is the last year- Why? Because they did not want to sacrifice the quality of the show by cow-towing to the people who wanted to be a part of a show or style that they or their vehicle did not fit into. Enough Bullshit- enjoy the site build whatever the hell you want, just don't expect everyone to like it! Have fun and post some pics of these rides!

What he said^^^^. I have a wheel standing '95 Impala. Pretty cool on the Impala site, but I don't talk about it here.

Welcome from Union Pier, MI. Who the hell is Sean and who gives a shit!
Who the hell does he think he is? You have to figure out if you can get valuable help from this forum that relates to your build and desires. By the way Ryan is the founder, maintainer (web master) and ultimate ruler which I respect and protect.

This site is dedicated to Traditional hot rods and customs, the way they were built back when. A deisel engine in no way fits in here. They are great for other or later builds, or a specialty rod to your liking, just don't post them here. I, like a majority of members have and like other styles of cars, trucks, etc. that don't fit in with the HAMBs guidlines, so i we don't post them here. The old arguement, if they had it back in the day they would have used it, doesn't fly...it's not how it was, and they didn't have i/them. Don't take replies pesonal, it is an internet forum, let it slide off and again enjoy the site:)

There are many, many great people on here, as well as enough info and pics to keep a person entertaind for years. Stick around for awhile, watch what flies and what doesn't, and maybe make a few new friends, you will be glad you did...Welcome from Oregon:)

this is a great site but the nail that sticks out will get hammered....you will always get crap from entitled a**holes on what you are doing to your hard earned car or truck. they forget that you bought it and can do what you wish to it. I took some crap recently because i'm doing fiberglass fenders. hey they are cheaper and will not rust, I would love to have real steel but mine were to far gone to repair and save. the haters complain but if I ask them to fork out an extra $1000 for me to get real steel you can guess what the answer will be.....you will also get the know it all that wants to belittle and insult you with their superior knowledge but as smart as they think they are they forget that they also at one time needed to ask the silly question to gain knowledge

there are a lot of members that have IFS IMO that is not what is in line with HAMB (based on what I read) they keep it somewhat on the down low and fit in just fine on this site.....i think the rules which are verbally strong are to limit straying from the sites mission but there is a strong grey area. I am building a 56 ford f100, i will be installing a 51 flathead (because I love them) and HID headlights so I can see at night, satin black, lowered with drop axle, drop shackles, reversed eye and unsprung leafs, its pretty close to stock but from my interpretation of HAMB requirements I'm in the grey area because of the HIDs and fiberglass fenders but I'm ok with that and others will have a hissy fit with what I'm doing. There are great people on this site that will help and teach you and you will inevitably do the same. i hope you stay and see the good and let the bad roll off you

  12. Don't let one person define this site or your welcomeness here. As far as I'm con cerned, if it's not a tuner and you like what happens here, welcome.

  13. No problem with my shorts (there are a few thousand other car sites), but I sure did get the name wrong. Ryan, not Sean, is who I meant, since it's his site. Sean is actually a member asking other step van owners to chime in to his thread. Hmmm, not getting off on the right foot at all! Anyway, Hitchhiker, your link to the pix of your own car build would indicate that I DO get it. So I think I'll gas it up. Good luck, boys!

  14. Old J...then again may be you do.....:)

the thing with this site is it's a conflict between Traditional hot rod ideas and traditional hot rod parts and style. While the Idea of hot rodding is to upgrade your car to the latest and greatest possible, that is really not the point of this site. The point of this site is to show the best years of hot rodding. basically 1920-1964 or so. Maybe a little later and to create and share builds that look like they could have been pulled right out of Throttle or Hot Rod magazine.....But, that is not all. People help each other here. Two guys I have never met have extended their friendship to me. One sent me some cut outs from a chop to fix my crappy chop, the other machined my F1 box for me, Blasted it, and sent along the new mount flange. Pretty cool right? It also showcases build talents. Plenty of non-traditional stuff has gone on here. As long as the end product is well executed it will fly. Does your Lincoln fit the strict traditional profile....Probably not. Would you Showcasing its build here be accepted and liked....not sure. Does it matter if everyone else likes it? NO....and I think you know that. Anyways, stick around for awhile this place is awesome and we're not all bad....Except for that Ryan guy, He's a hoodlum. ;)

Hope to see you back here.

anyways here are a couple examples of what will fly and what won't.

    cool

Wow. Longest intro thread I think I've seen. I think you'll be fine on here OJ. Just chill out a bit. The biggest issues here are usually about attitude rather than the cars you have or like. If you post something that is marginal and get a ribbing for it, just wear it and move on. More often than not guys will appreciate anything that demonstrates an interesting idea, creativity or outstanding workmanship. Don't be too quick to judge this place. That never ends well.

    Welcome

No one is forgetting anything. Of course anyone is entitled to do what they wish to their own car, just dont expect garbage like IFS, 22 inch wheels and billet do-dads to be accepted or tolerated around these parts. There are plenty of places on the internet (I'm assuming, I never really bothered to check since I'm sure they must suck) that cater to that type of car........the HAMB isnt one of them, we dont want that crap around here. BTW when did Ryan change his name?
