So...last night my "hot rod mentor" (I've known the guy all my life...when he talks I listen) laid into me about having gl*** fuel filters on my bike. I got the whole speech...vibration, break, fire.....all makes sense I guess. I asked for his suggestions as to what to use and he said in typical fashion, "Anything else". So my obvious question is....what are you guys using?
I run the gl*** filters. I like'em. I'm not worried about it breaking. Make sure its not located where vibration will cause it to be against metal parts.
Get one of the cheap alluminum ones. They come in various anodized colors, and they can be cleaned. You can get them from J&P Cycles, or JC Whitney for under $10.00.
I like the gl*** ones because you can se how much is actually getting past the pet**** strainer inside your tank. Plus you can dump it when you see that it is getting pretty full. We nickel plate inside out tanks so the amount of scale that builds up is minimal. Mike
i like to run the see thru plastic ones because i was taught the same the gl*** mixed with the pot metal makes for a poor combo both for seal and safety having said that i do have them on one bike now....got em too cheap not to as an added note we always use the pink stuff from the radiator shop for the inside works ***s
The Linkert on my 57 Pan has filter in the carb body, I have used the gl*** ones on other bikes without problem. If the gl*** is a problem, subs***ue coated steel tubing.
I use the strainer in the pet**** on mine - I had used the aluminum cleanable ones but it acted like a heat sink (located between the jugs on my ironhead) and would heat the fuel SO I just creamed the tanks and relied on the pet**** strainer
The PepZoneAutoLad gl*** ones work great, you can see the fuel and the sediment. I've been using them for years and I've never had a single problem.
My bike came with two filters, ones was gl***, the other was identical, but the gl*** was replaced with metal. The darn bike kept running hot everytime I rode it fast. Nothing could cure the problem until the local brit bike shop guru told me to try it without filters. Those pieces of **** were restricting fuel flow at high speed and leaning the mixture So, for me, no filter anymore. The carb has a mesh filter in it anyways. I also run the fuel line lower than the carb. Sediments will collect in the lowest point of the fuel line. I never had any sealing or breakage problem with the gl*** one though.
I got one on my chopper (ridged not the new sissy softail) and afer 90,000 miles it's still doing fine...
And my wifes 65 Triumph. The filter is also a fram screw in Ford filter. The other end of the block has two outlets to the carbs.
Thanks for the advice guys! I really do like the looks of the gl*** filters and I haven't had any trouble with them (although I am sure you only need to have something happen once) I may just keep them and put up with his "abuse" Thanks again!
I've been riding old Rat Bikes for 35 years now and have had two fires but both were caused by Alcohol. 2am kickstarting, flooded, backfire = Fire!!. Neither was to bad, I wobbled away each time but I carry one of these now.
