Hi ' 30s car with mechanical brakes , rods running front & rear are approx 3ft & 4 ft long & 5/16 in diameter. They are damaged + worn , just wondering what type of steel are these usually made from ( they are in tension when brakes applied ) Would they need to be eg EN24 or would silver steel be ok or ..? Also the clevis pins at the ends of the rods ,are these typically hardened ? Thanks in advance for any information.
airnwater, I made some for an A bone in the '90s out of meralloy, it is like soupped up cold rolled steel I suppose. The fella is still running it and actually drives it to and from work when the weather permits. I don't know that Ford used anything special as in some sort of an alloy, and I would think that cold rolled steel may work real well.
My brother bought some 32 brake rods from one of the repro places. They are made of Craptanium. They were expensive and the quality was horrible. A 3 year old with a grinder could have done better. You can make better at home.
Synders has good quality ones. forged ends and at a decent price (do you want cheap for brake rods?). http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/273 Whats the damage? are they bent? rods gouged from contact?
Thanks for suggestions so far ; Non-Ford so rods will have to be made up , the oversize clevis pins Snyders have may be useful .
