Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by brutus t maximus, Sep 20, 2003.

  1. been reasearching mechanical fuel injection for years, and understand how the hilborn etc work, also understand how chevy's mechanical systems worked, and how bosch CIS works..

i am looking for info or websites where guys are building their own..

    anybody in hambland?

    anybody anywhere?

dont know if it's any help, but i ran a mercedes/bosch mechanical injection on an old mercedes 6 in an old dodge for a little while...
    any ?'s in particular?
I had problems getting info and parts, and had some major tuning issues... so ditched the entire idea and went SBC/4bbl.

Ive been thinking of using the entire injection setup on a slant 6 for some time now... but havent really got around to putting any real time into it.

  3. lol,, just answered a post from you re: your 727, checked back and here you are....

i am looking for info on the bosch CIS injectors, such as how many lb/hr can they deliver, or how many hp can a CIS injector support?

Been looking into splittin my 472 into 2 banks of 4 cylinders, and adding two CIS systems to run it, one for each bank.. but i dont know if the CIS system can support 236 cu/in each.

236 cu/in is a pretty good sized 4 cylinder, but when you consider that my engine read line is 5000 rpm max, maybe a smaller 4 cylinder with CIS that has a higher redline rpm might be close enough..

Ferrari did this sort of scheme on some of there 12 cylinders, they used two individual CIS systems and split the engine into two 6 cylinders.. and made it work well..

that is one direction, i am looking into..

the other involves a ground up design, but would still like to use the CIS injectors if they can support my projected needs.

I think the early 80's VWs had some form of Mechanical Fuel injection also, most likely Bosch. In case you are searching junkyards for parts.

yeah, saw your reply on my 727 post... thanks...

Ive run Bosch mechanical injection on a turbo BMW 4cyl, too... experimented with two systems, one coming on under boost. Big headache, but i had a SERIOUSLY LOW budget at the time... all junkyard and Home Depot parts.

I was told that the CIS injectors differ between many models they were on... but always had a hard time with finding any type of cross reference chart. I couldnt see how Bosch made so many different injectors, though... it seems they would only make a few...

It would take a lot of experimentation, but im sure it could be done. I had either fuel starvation, or WAY too much fuel on the beemer 1.8 liter that was turbo'd. But when not under boost, it seemed to run really well. I probably should have stuck to one system, with an extra injector under boost. It had a list of other issues, as well... which should have been sorted out before playing with injection...

On an 8 cylinder, it seems that as long as both systems were synched, it should work well...

Im pretty sure the Ferrari system used much larger injectors... ones that i never seemed to find.

I made a very crude LBS/HR injector tester... a high pressure fuel pump, a beaker (remember them from highschool science class?), a jerry can, and a stop watch...
i could pull 6 injectors from the same car in the junk yard, and none of them were the same. Close, though.

at one time i had at least 40 injectors sitting in my roll-away... really did a LOT of experimenting. Even tried 2 injectors per cylinder, with one CIS system.

VW's did have a mechanical injection system... which is what i stripped most of my stuff from... as well as earlier mercedes, audi's and some BMW's...

If you have the time to experiment, and are not really impatient like i was, you could get a good setup going pretty cheaply...

  6. I thought about the same thing, using the bosch CIS on an old stovebolt six I got here. Check out the "Z" car websites, alot of those guys have fiddled with the Bosch systems. That is where I have been looking anyways.
