I've had very good luck with the Carter Street pumps. They put out about 5 PSI and don't hold pressure after they're shut off. I forget the gallons per hour but it's plenty for a street car

Carter makes a good product. I would make sure that the base is screwed on, enabling you to "clock" the base so the outlet is where you need it to be.

I have also had good luck with Carter pumps. When I got my BBC done I installed a Summit brand pump. Seemed to be a decent pump but not much cast material around the inlet fitting area. Used it for awhile but when I went to change to a different fitting the body of the pump cracked off. Next tried an expensive Edelbrock pump. Was OK for about a month then the pressure dropped from about 5-6 PSI to aprrox. 1 PSI. When I returned that one I went with the Carter. So far so good.

I just went through this with a Buddy of mine. He started with a new Carter and had driveability issues. We checked pump pressure, it varied between 8 and 12 p.s.i.. He went back to the parts store and came home with a new Delphi, checked pressure, 12 p.s.i., took it back for a refund. As far as I can tell all of these new replacement pumps are Chinese manufactured no matter what name they have on them. He then went with an Edelbrock made in U.S.A. street performance pump that is clockable, (the others are not) the Edelbrocks are pricey at around $140 but it puts out a consistant smooth 6 p.s.i. but seems to be a quality piece. All seems to be well now....we'll see!

This is the AC fuel pump on my Novas' 327/350 hp engine.
Sourced from my local Chevrolet parts dept, was many years ago so may need to scan the internet.

I have not run a mechanical pump in a long time, but back when I did, had a Carter, a Edelbrock, and a holley, all worked fine. I guess today like lots of parts it can be a **** shoot.

I'd aim for like no more than 90gph Holley/Summit has one that size I think, too much pump and your just heating up the fuel. The factory C3 Corvette pump is just under 40gph, has a return and I ran one for bout 375hp But I broke two of the auto parts store pumps(6000rpm shifts). So then went with a Carter strip pump and too much psi, had to use a byp*** reg And deadhead regulators to get it reasonable. The Carter street pump is fine and only needed the byp*** reg But heats the fuel with my stock 3/8 lines(pump reads 400ish deg while the block is 200). So gonna try a 90gph Summit pump with just a byp*** reg.

What ever you buy, check it with a good pressure gauge. Unless you want the "look" consider an electric pump.

I believe this to be very true. Just about any product you get, name brand or not, seem to have some real quality issues.

This is what I've been using for quite a while.

Fuel Pump – Street Performance, Small-Block

Unfortunately, I think it is I longer available.

  13. I just went through 3 N.A.P.A. Carter pumps and another Delphi brand from N.A.P.A. that I swore was a Carter re boxed under a different name. All junk. Carter is a "used to be" good product, not any longer. Edelbrock part #1721 Made in the U.S.A. cured my problem. There high-performance pump is part #1722. Yes you can change the clocking of the bottom on both pumps. To heck with the price, it's a Quality pump.

I have a 65 Corvette with an L79. I put on a stock replacement pump from Ecklers a few years ago. Ran fine for awhile and then **** the bed. At a Friday night drive in car show. I had to call a friend in to tow me home. The tow of shame......Anyway the pivot pin backed out of the pump arm and that was why it quit. I think I put an AC pump on after that. It's been fine for a couple years now. But it's all a **** shoot nowadays. This pump hasn't had any issues but I don't really beat on this car. I'll run it up thru the gears now and then but I don't wring it's neck like it was new. The engine has never been apart and she's old.

On this budget build I installed a $19.99 Precision pump from Oreillys.
I have driven it all summer with no issues. Above 6 grand all the time. If and when I upgrade the fuel pump I will use a ALLSTAR brand pump. That is a common pump around here on round track cars. They are about $180.00. I have heard more than one snicker about my fuel pump and distributor.

Another source would be to go to a marine grade mechanical unit. Ya I know I went another direction but California leaves little options so I went with what works best for a carbs that does not have Holley type squirter pump that fairs well with evaporation for ease of start up.

I've been using Carter M6900 Performance pumps for 50 years on my Chevy 327-400 small blocks, Maximum PSI is 6# and flow 120 GPH. I highly recommend it.

The non-performance pumps sold at any Auto Parts store are a total ****-shoot, I've had some that flooded the carburetor, set up a fuel pressure test and found them producing 10-12+ PSI.

FYI those that need a pump that can be clocked. I just bought one from Napa for a 57 Chevy. Cant remember the brand but it was inexpesive compared to an Aftermarket. Cant speak to the PSI, but It works fine on my ol 327 4bbl.

Still a fan of the old reliable M6624 Carter. Usually available at any parts store.

Carter M2468 can be clocked and has ports in the main body if you’re cramped for space below.

Well I bought four of the old Carters at Summit. All of them failed to work out of the boxes. Ended up with the cheap old Carter.

  26. When I went through this with saltracer219 I learned it's a well know issue for the Guys behind the parts counter. I asked why NAPA corporate doesn't go to the supplier and get them to resolve there build problem. I was told most customers just put an inline regulator on and don't return for refunds. It's a strait up win win for them, the defective pumps sell and sales increase with the in-line reg. Now that's a F-ed up program!

I've gotten to the point where I wont run even a mechanical fuel pump without using a pressure regulator after it. Just seen too many issues with pumps that put out pressures high enough to flood carbs when they over pressure the float needles.

  28. That just seems wrong but does cure the problem and that seems to be NAPA's plan. Bump up those sales! They should sell the pumps at half price since they are only doing 1/2 there designed job!

Well, that may get the job done but if the pump was right in the first place it woulden't be necessary.

With the RobbMc you are dealing with the owner or his tech guy. No **** shoot/keep your fingers crossed you get a good one. It’s expensive, but a quality USA made product from a small company. IF it gives you any problems they will fix it and stand behind their product.
